Softball Records 2-0 Day with Wins over Siena & Manhattan

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla.- The Bucknell Bison softball team defeated the Siena Saints (10-6), 5-3 in a comeback victory and shutout the Manhattan Jaspers (2-10), 3-0 on Saturday.
Against Siena, the Bison trailed 2-0 entering the top of the sixth inning before exploding for five runs climaxed by Zoie Smith's three-run double. Sarah Zimmerman achieved the victory while Hunter Vestal earned the save.
Versus Manhattan, the Orange & Blue Crew jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a Smith sacrifice fly. MaKenzie Hilling later hit a two-run single for the 3-0 advantage. Savannah Jones hurled a complete game shutout to unlock the win
Siena Recap
The Bison threatened to tally in the first inning but couldn't push any runs across. Bucknell started its advancement with two outs. Smith walked and Popella singled. MaKenzie Hilling's lofty fly-ball to left field ended the inning.
Madison Roukey started in the circle for the Bison and achieved two straight innings where she faced the minimum number of hitters.
Bucknell almost scored again in the third inning. Annabella Hawkins led off with a single and advanced to second on Elena Horn's grounder. Haley Speicher smashed a single to center field but was called out for leaving the box too early. Instead of runners at first and third with one out, the Bison had a runner on second with two outs. Smith walked for a second time but Siena's amazing catch of Popella's fly-out ceased the frame.
The Saints used the momentum in their third frame to take a 1-0 lead. A leadoff walk and two sacrifice bunts placed the runner on third. An infield single scored the Saint.
Siena threatened to add more runs in the fourth inning. Two singles and advancement placed runners on second and third with two outs. Roukey avoided more damage with a swinging strikeout.
Bucknell had another scoring opportunity in the fifth inning. Horn reached on an error and pinch hitter Nicole Lioumis smacked a single into left center field. Smith's lineout and Popella's grounder ended the inning.
Sarah Zimmerman entered the circle in the bottom of the fifth inning and immediately run into trouble. A walk and a wild pitch placed a Saint at second. A single scored that runner. The single hitter stole second and then advanced to third on another wild pitch. The batter walked and the following hitter smoked a double into the outfield. One run scored but Speicher's perfect throw to Smith prevented a second run from tallying. As it stood, the Bison trailed 3-0.
The Orange & Blue used the momentum from Speicher's peg to seize the lead. Hilling doubled and Savannah Jones walked. Both players were removed for pinch hitters. Shea Malone singled up the middle to score Juliette Basso (Hilling's pinch runner). Siena made a pitching change but the Bison didn't stop. Hawkins singled to left field to load the bases. Horn hit into a fielder's choice when Siena cut down the lead runner at home. Speicher worked a two-out walk to score the second run. Smith strolled to the plate and managed the count. Finally, a fat pitch arrived and Smith sent it screaming to the left center gap. All party members scored and Bucknell had the 5-3 lead.
Hunter Vestal entered the circle and pitched effectively the final two innings to earn her first career save. In the seventh inning, Siena reached on an error but the runner was caught stealing. Savannah Jones threw a complete game shutout to silence the Jaspers' bats. The only trouble she faced was a bases-loaded jam in the seventh inning which she escaped by obtaining a strikeout.
Bucknell scored its first run in the first inning when Horn walked, stole second, and moved to third base on a Speicher groundout. Smith came through with a sacrifice fly.
Hilling provided the other two runs in the third inning with a smashing single to left field. The Bison's magic started with two out. Speicher walked and Smith singled. Both advanced on a passed ball. Popella loaded the bases via a walk. Hilling came through with a two-run single to effectively seal the win.
The Bison had a chance to pad the lead in the fourth inning. Hawkins reached on an error and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Lioumis, pinch hit for Horn, and walked with two outs. Horn was re-inserted as a pinch runner. Speicher laid down a bunt single to load the base. The inning ended when Smith hit into a fielder's choice.
The Jaspers placed a runner on third in the sixth inning. Hawkins misplayed a grounder and compounded the mistake with a throwing error, placing the batter on second. Hawkins found redemption by cleanly fielding the next two grounders to end the inning.
Manhattan went down swinging in the final inning. A single was sandwiched between two outs. Two straight errors by Popella and Hawkins loaded the bases and brought the leading run to the plate. Jones refused to yield any runs and won the game with a swinging strikeout.
