BOSTON, Mass. – The Bucknell men's lacrosse team outshot the hosting Terriers 47-25 and benefited from 25 Terrier turnovers, but it wasn't enough as Boston U. won 13-10 at Nickerson Field Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Bison move to 1-1 in Patriot League play and the Terriers improve to 1-1.
The Bison entered the fourth quarter down half-a-dozen goals before outscoring the Terriers 4-1 in the final frame. They also mounted a small comeback in the first quarter to trail by just one after Boston opened the game with three unanswered scores. Boston managed to score on 13 of its 21 shots on goal and won 64 percent of the faceoffs (16-25).
Connor Davis posted his fourth hat trick of the season, freshman Hans Huber scored twice, and fellow freshman Sean Berrigan tied Davis with three points on a goal and two assists. Bucknell's rookie class accounted for four of the team's 10 goals, as Peter Grandolfo got in on the action in the first quarter.
Davis scored his second of the game with two seconds left in the opening quarter to get the Bison within one of tying, but Boston tallied the first two goals of the second. Will Hopkins found the back of the net with 1:10 to play in the second, as the Terriers entered halftime with a 7-5 advantage.
The Terriers held Bucknell off the scoreboard over the first 13 minutes of the second half and scored three unanswered, building their lead to 5-10. Huber ended the drought with his second goal of the game and sixth of the season with 1:49 to go in the third.
Berrigan, Cam Doolan and Ethan Gyllenhaal each contributed to the 3-0 run to start the fourth, and Davis notched his hat trick with 40 seconds left in the contest, but it wasn't enough.
Davis also led the Bison with five ground balls, while Gyllenhaal, Brendan Coyle and Duncan Hill each posted four. John Young and Will Pickering both caused two turnovers.
The Bison have a quick turnaround, as they return to Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium to host Richmond at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 12.
