Men's Lacrosse Handed First Home Loss by #16/17 Richmond

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's lacrosse team played host to #16/17 Richmond at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium Tuesday afternoon and fell 17-5 to the reigning Atlantic 10 champions. Richmond's top-ranked scoring defense gave the Bison fits throughout the game, and its top-10 offense was more than efficient, placing 24 of its 31 shots on goal.
The two teams were even on faceoffs and turnovers, and the Bison posted a 35-31 advantage in ground balls, but the Spiders made good on 88 percent of their clears compared to just 68 percent for Bucknell. Additionally, Bucknell managed to place just 17 of its 35 shots on target.
Richmond, which was allowing just 8.2 goals per game entering Tuesday's contest, limited Bucknell to one score in the first half while jumping out to a 9-1 lead. The Spiders grew their advantage to 13-2 by the end of the third quarter. Three of Bucknell's goals were scored in the final 15 minutes of action.
Bucknell rotated goalies throughout the contest, with freshman Matt Shepard seeing the bulk of the minutes (28.31). Max Nolan led the three goalies with three saves and six goals against in 22 minutes of playing time.
Luke Grayum and Dalton Young led the Spiders with five points each. Grayum scored four goals and Grayum added three, while eight other Spiders found the back of the net.
Four different players scored one goal apiece for Bucknell. Freshman Peter Grandolfo got the Bison on the board first less than a minute into the second quarter. Junior Cam Doolan scored midway through the third, and freshman Sean Berrigan, sophomore Chris Begier and senior Patrick Ciquera each scored goals in the fourth quarter.
Seniors Duncan Hill and Ethan Gyllenhaal both registered three caused turnovers. Freshman Colin McLoy led the Bison with six ground balls while going 8 for 13 on faceoffs.
Bucknell fell to 2-5 (1-1 PL) on the season with the loss, while Richmond improved to 5-2.
Bucknell looks ahead to Saturday, March 16 when Colgate visits Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. The Raiders are 5-3 (2-0 PL) after posting back-to-back wins over Lafayette and Loyola. Saturday's game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
