LEWISBURG, Pa.- The Bucknell Bison Softball team (14-17, 5-1 Patriot League) dropped a 3-2 game to the Army Black Knights (5-25, 1-5 Patriot League) in eight innings. The loss snapped Bucknell's PL-best 11-game winning streak in conference play. It was the second straight year Army and Bucknell played on Easter Sunday.
Bucknell's offense sputtered, only obtaining three hits against the Army pitching staff. The Black Knights jumped to a 2-0 lead before the Bison tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth inning. Army added a run in the eighth inning, and the Bison could not counter.
Recap
Madison Roukey started in the circle for the Bison and only pitched two innings. The Black Knights scored one run in each of her innings. The first inning saw a lead-off walk and a triple open the tallying. The second inning had a lead-off double, a sacrifice bunt, and a single combine for the 2-0 lead. Roukey prevented further scoring but was replaced by Hunter Vestal, who pitched the final six innings.
Bucknell appeared to score in the second inning, but a decision overruled the run. Brooke Popella led off with a double, and MaKenzie Hilling grounded out. Angelina Seropian hit a scorching down the line that seemed fair and would have gone for extra bases, but the umpire ruled a foul ball. The next pitch was hit back to the Army pitcher, and a double play was converted.
The Bison tied the game in the fifth inning. Hilling walked, and Marissa Rapino, pinch-hitting for Seropian, singled through the left side. Bridget Haller was inserted for Hilling as a pinch runner. Bella Radican singled down the left field, scoring Haller and advancing Rapino to third. Noelle Gardon drove home Rapino with a sacrifice fly. A grounder ended the inning.
The Black Knights seized the lead in the eighth inning. An infield single started the inning. The next batter reached on a fielder's choice when Popella went for second base but was beat to the bag. A sacrifice bunt advanced both runners. A RBI grounder followed, and Army had the 3-2 lead.
Bucknell tried to counterattack but went down 1-2-3 to end the game.
