Softball Upended by FDU & Hofstra

JACKSON TOWNSHIP, N.J.- The Bucknell Bison softball team (4-8) dropped two games to the FDU Knights (3-4) and the Hofstra Pride (2-4) on Sunday. FDU defeated Bucknell 7-6 in a comeback victory and Hofstra won 8-4.
FDU Recap
The game started great for the Bison. Haley Speicher reached on an error and stole second. Zoie Smith and Savannah Jones followed with walks. Brooke Popella smashed a double to left center to clear the bases for the 3-0 Bucknell lead.
Sarah Zimmerman started in the circle for Bucknell. The Knights immediately counterattacked. A Berg single and an error by Popella set the stage. A second single scored Berg. A third single scored another Knight. A lineout ended the inning, but FDU had crept to within 3-2.
The Bison got a run back in the second inning. Noelle Gardon led off with a single. Zoie Smith hit a triple into right field to score her fellow senior with two outs. Bucknell led 4-2.
Bucknell missed a golden opportunity to increase the lead in the third inning. Hilling singled to left field, and Zimmerman was inserted as a pinch runner.
Zimmerman stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball as Annabella Hawkins drew a walk. FDU made a pitching change. Hawkins swiped second, and Shea Malone walked. But Gardon and Juliette Basso struck out to end the inning.
The Orange & Blue added two runs in the fourth inning. Speicher led off with a triple, and Smith drove in the sophomore with a sharp single. Smith stole second and scored when Hilling singled through the left side. Smith would have stayed at third but Hilling made a move for second allowing the fleet-footed catcher to dart for home plate.
As typical of the Knights, FDU scored after the Bison tallied. A walk and a single started the inning. A grounder advanced both runners. A single scored one Knight and placed runners on the corners. A fly-out was the second out. Zimmerman looked poised to escape the inning until a slicing ball caught the right-field corner for a triple and two RBIs. A strikeout followed, but FDU was back within one run, 6-5.
Hunter Vestal entered the circle in the fifth inning. Vestal quickly obtained two quick outs before yielding a double. A walk followed along with a wild pitch to place the runners at second and third. Smith allowed a passed ball to tie the game. A swinging strikeout followed, but the score was 6-6.
Bucknell collected two walks in the sixth inning but did not capitalize.
Madison Roukey was tabbed to pitch the bottom of the seventh inning. A close pitch on a 3-2 count was called ball four. An FDU single followed. A perfect sacrifice bunt followed for runners at second and third. A planned walk loaded the bases. A single up the middle followed, and FDU won 7-6.
Hofstra Recap
Savannah Jones started in the circle for the Bison. Hofstra struck for three runs in the first inning. An error, a single, and two stolen bases set up second and third for the Pride. A squeeze play scored the first run. A sacrifice fly tallied the second run. Two more singles scored the third run. A swinging strikeout ended the inning.
Bucknell attempted to counterattack in its first frame. Horn and Speicher singled to start the proceedings. But two flyouts and a fielder's choice ended the opportunity.
The Bison scored a run in the second inning. Hilling reached on an error and advanced to third after two sacrifice bunts. Ava Aguilar tripled to the right-center gap to score Hilling. Bucknell trailed 3-1.

Popella raced for home and was thrown out. The Hofstra catcher was there early, but no obstruction call was made. Aguilar struck out to end the inning.
Hofstra scored two runs in the fifth inning. A single was intermixed with a pop-up and a strikeout. The Pride smashed a two-run home run for a 5-1 lead.
The Orange & Blue had two more baserunners in its fifth frame. Horn reached on an error, and Speicher walked. Two fielder's choices and a lineout extinguished the threat.
The Bison got a run back in the sixth inning. Hilling walked, and Noelle Gardon singled to right field. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Hawkins hit a grounder to score Hilling.
Mea Consentino entered the circle in the sixth inning. Hofstra added three insurance runs in the seventh inning after two outs. Hofstra smashed four straight doubles to score three runs.
Bucknell returned the favor in the seventh inning by scoring two runs with two outs. Jones and Popella singled. Hilling walked to load the bases. Gardon hit a scorching shot past the first baseman to score two runs. Hofstra inserted a relief pitcher to obtain the final out.
