LEWISBURG, Pa.- The Bucknell Bison softball team (4-9) fell 6-2 to the Fairfield Stags (1-5) on Friday night during the first day of the Blue Hen Invitational. Bucknell fell behind 2-0 and rallied to tie the game 2-2 before allowing four runs in the sixth inning.
Recap
Madison Roukey started in the circle for Bucknell. Fairfield struck for two runs, due to two Bison errors providing new life for the Stags. Fairfield hit a leadoff double before Roukey obtained two straight strikeouts. Roukey appeared to escape the inning as she induced a pop-up in foul territory. Noelle Gardon camped under the ball but could not corral the sphere. The batter walked and then a single up the middle scored the first run. The next batter hit a pop-up to Brooke Popella, who dropped the ball. Fairfield tallied a second run. Roukey ended the inning with a strikeout.
The Bison scored a run in the third inning. Gardon singled up the middle but was replaced on first base due to a fielder's choice. Haley Speicher hit a fly-ball to right field. The right fielder dropped the ball and Horn scored.
Bucknell tied the game in the fourth inning. The frame started with Popella singling and Savannah Jones walking. Hilling's fly-out advanced Zimmerman (who was inserted for Popella) to third base. Annabella Hawkins followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2-2.
The Orange & Blue had a chance to take the lead in the fifth inning. Gardon walked, and Bella Radican was inserted as a pinch runner. A sacrifice bunt advanced her to second base. Zoie Smith singled up the middle, and Radican raced for home. The junior appeared to slide under the tag, but the umpire disagreed.
Fairfield used the momentum to score four runs in the sixth inning. Two singles and a fielder's choice started the frame. Jones replaced Roukey in the circle. Two walks followed. The second walk came on a 3-2 count, and the fourth ball appeared to catch the strike zone, but the umpire called it for Fairfield. A run scored. A RBI grounder made it 4-2. A single up the middle tallied two runs. A fly-out ended the inning, but Fairfield led 6-2.
The Bison made it exciting in the seventh inning. Hawkins hit a single, followed by two lineouts. Nicole Lioumis, pinch-hitting, walked. Juliette Basso was inserted as a pinch hitter and ran the count to 3-0 before obtaining a 3-2 count. The second baseman caught the lineout to end the game.
