SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Bucknell men's tennis team came out victorious in several tight matches and defeated Le Moyne 6-1 on Sunday at the Central PA Tennis Center. Adam Stavrakas and Liam Kilmer both won three-setters, and Brendan McDonald provided the clinching point with a 6-4, 7-6 win at No. 4 singles.
Now 5-2 on the season, the Bison began the day with a sweep of the three doubles matches, highlighted by a convincing 6-1 win from Kilmer and Tim Zelikovsky at No. 3.
The top three singles flights went off first, and Le Moyne got on the board when Peter Hatton handed Amar Tahirovic only his fourth loss in 17 matches this season. Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega defeated Alvaro Nunez 7-5, 6-4 at third singles, an Stavrakas held off Leon Grundstroem 6-4 in the third set to move the Bison to the brink.
Bucknell still needed one more win from the bottom half of the lineup, and McDonald clinched it with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) win over Luka Stojanovic on Court 4. Kilmer spotted Kacper Piekarek the first set, then rallied to take the next two, 6-2, 6-1.
Zelikovsky was the last one on at No. 6 singles, and he breezed past Rodrigo Beires 6-2, 6-1 to improve to 16-1 on the season. His 58 career singles wins are now tied with Octavio Canibe for 11th-most in team history, and he needs just one more win to move into the top 10 on Bucknell's all-time list.
Bucknell returns to action next Saturday with two more matches in South Williamsport. The Bison will host St. Bonaventure at 1 p.m., followed by Bloomsburg at 5 p.m.
