JACKSON TOWNSHIP, N.J.- The Bucknell Bison softball team (4-6) fell 3-2 to the FDU Knights (2-4) on Saturday afternoon. The Bison led 2-0 before FDU rallied obtaining the narrow victory.
Recap
Savannah Jones started in the circle for the Bison. There were only two baserunners for either team during the first three innings. In FDU's second frame, Barela singled to left field, but Zoie Smith gunned her down, trying to swipe second base on a swinging strikeout. The next batter doubled however a grounder left her stranded at second.
Bucknell struck for two runs in the fourth inning. Elena Horn led off with a single, and Shea Malone sacrificed her to second base. Zoie Smith singled to left field and advanced to second on the throw, with Horn ending up at third base. MaKenzie Hilling popped up. Jones came through in the clutch with two outs, depositing a single into left field to score Horn and Smith. Bucknell had the 2-0 lead.
The advantage did not last long. In FDU's fifth inning, the Knights tied the game. Berg doubled to left center and advanced to third on a grounder. Barela followed with a single. Berg did not score on the play, but she did cross home plate when Barela swiped second. Barela scored when Hoesman doubled to center field. Costa struck out swinging to end the frame, but the score was tied 2-2.
FDU seized the lead in the sixth inning. Berg reached on a Brooke Popella error and ended up on second base. Madison Roukey entered the game in relief. Smith allowed a passed ball to plant Berg on third. Flores singled to left field to score Berg. Roukey recovered and obtained three straight outs.
Bucknell attempted to extend the game in the seventh inning. Jones singled, and Speicher was sent in as a pinch runner. With two outs, Speicher dashed for second base but was thrown out. FDU won 3-2.
