SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Bucknell men's tennis team swept all three doubles matches and all six singles contests on the way to a 7-0 whitewash of Mount St. Mary's on Friday evening at the Central PA Tennis Center.
Bucknell improved to 4-2 this spring and claimed the doubles point for the fifth time in six matches. Amar Tahirovic was once again victorious at both No. 1 singles and doubles, and Adam Stavrakas was part of comeback wins at No. 2 singles and doubles.
Tahirovic and Brendan McDonald won 6-3 at No. 1 doubles, and Stavrakas and Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega clinched the point on Court 2, winning six straight games after falling behind 3-0.
Bucknell won five of the six singles matches in straight sets. The lone exception was Stavrakas, who dropped the first set to Filippos Zachiotis before taking the second set 6-2 and the super tiebreaker 10-7. Stavrakas won the first six points to take control of the tiebreaker.
Tahirovic was a quick 6-2, 6-1 winner over Akarsh Geonkar at first singles. McDonald followed with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Marcel Cronin at No. 4, and one spot up in the ladder Bain clinched the team victory with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Victor Mignot.
Liam Kilmer added a 6-2, 6-3 win over Elliot Stevens at No. 5, and Tim Zelikovsky finished off the evening with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Luke Papayoanou at No. 6.
Zelikovsky improved to 15-1 on the season with his seventh straight victory. The Bison senior is a perfect 6-0 in dual matches dropping only two sets along the way. Tahirovic is now 13-3 in singles and won his team-leading 17th doubles match of the year.
Bucknell is back in action on Sunday, hosting Le Moyne at 11 a.m. at the Central PA Tennis Center.
