POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Bucknell jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after scoring three goals in a 30-second span in the first quarter of Saturday's game at Tenney Stadium, but Marist scored 11 of the final 13 in the first half and defeated Bucknell 17-10.
The Bison were perfect on clears (13-of-13), led the Red Foxes in shots (47-43), and committed fewer turnovers (14-16), but Marist goalie Noble Smith turned away 17 shots on goal while his team converted 17 of its 25 on-target attempts. Marist strung together two separate 5-0 runs in the first half and scored four unanswered between the third and fourth quarters. After Bucknell's 3-0 start to the game, it scored back-to-back goals just once more in the fourth quarter. The Bison moved to 0-2 on the young season, while Marist opens the season 1-0.
Cam Doolan was one of three Bison to notch a pair of goals on Saturday, and his first came with less than two minutes gone in the game to open the scoring. John Young struck 15 seconds later thanks to a Brendan Coyle assist, the only of the game for Bucknell, and Michael Meyer found the back of the net 15 seconds after that. During the 3-0 run, Bucknell held a 12-1 advantage in shots and had all three goals before the Red Foxes could set up any type of offense.
The tide quickly changed, as Joshua Balcarcel scored with 6:28 to go in the opening quarter to get the Red Foxes on the board. It was the first of five goals in the game for Balcarcel, and he was one of three Red Foxes to register a hat trick on Saturday. His first goal sparked a 5-0 Marist run that lasted three minutes into the second quarter. Connor Davis put an end to the run with his sixth goal of the year, but it was just a brief hiatus as Marist went on to score six of the last seven before halftime.
Davis scored again at the 13:25 mark in the third quarter for the first goal of the second half, but Marist added four more to build its largest lead of the contest at 15-6. The Bison would convert four more times, including the first career goal by freshman Luke Brunner and the first of the season by sophomore Chris Begier, but the Bison never got closer than seven the rest of the way.
Doolan, Davis and Meyer each registered two scores, and freshman Peter Grandolfo scored his fourth career goal after posting a hat trick in his collegiate debut at Merrimack. Grandolfo also added a team-high three caused turnovers and was second behind Coyle with six ground balls. Coyle led the faceoff efforts, winning 14 of 29 and supplying eight ground balls for a second week in a row.
Max Nolan received the loss after allowing six goals in the first 18 minutes of action. Jaz Zanelli came in in relief and allowed 11 goals with six saves.
Bucknell makes its home debut at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium next Saturday, Feb. 17, when Dartmouth visits for a noon game.
