- The Bucknell swimming and diving teams host their annual three-day trials/finals invitational this weekend. It's another strong field this year, with UConn (women), Davidson, Delaware, Fordham, Seton Hall, and UMBC joining the Bison.
- The meet emulates a postseason championship, with trials each morning at 10 a.m. followed by evening finals at 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 5 p.m. on Sunday.
- The program consists of 13 individual swimming events and five relays, as well as 1- and 3-meter diving competitions. Sunday's slate includes the 1,650 freestyle, giving most of the distance swimmers their first mile race of the season.
- This will be Seton Hall's second trip to Kinney Natatorium this season. The Pirates were also here for the Bison Fall Invite on Oct. 26. Â Â Â
- Opposing team dual records:
- Connecticut: Women 3-2
- Davidson: Men 2-3, Women 3-2
- Delaware: Men 2-2, Women 2-2
- Seton Hall: Men 4-2, Women 4-2
- UMBC: Men 3-2, Women 3-2Â
- The Bison women last competed on Nov. 9, going 2-1 in a home quad meet with wins over American (244.5-54.5) and Lafayette (234-66) and a loss to Navy (161-134). Â
- The Bison women are off to an outstanding start in 2024-25, and they are 3-1 in duals. After winning 13 of 16 events in a 215-84 victory over Boston University in the season opener, the Bison came back and won 10 races against Seton Hall and Binghamton at the non-scored Bison Fall Invite. Bucknell won six events in the quad meet two weeks ago, including three from standout freshman Clara Renner.
- Renner earned Patriot League Swimmer of the Week honors after claiming the 200 fly and 500 and 1,000 freestyles in the quad. She won the same three events against Boston University and now has eight individual event wins in three meets to start her career.
- Renner has already put her name on three Bucknell top-10 lists, and last time out she moved up to third all-time in the 200 fly with a time of 2:01.65. Â It was the fastest swim by a Bison that event in five seasons, and Renner is already closing in on Julianna Foss' school record of 2:00.00, set at the 2018 Patriot League Championships.
- Kyla Kelly won two events in each of the last two meets. She captured the 100 free and 100 IM and also placed fourth in the 50 free in the quad against Navy, American, and Lafayette.
- Rylie Giles was also victorious in the quad meet, taking first by two seconds in the 200 free.
- Bucknell's divers are off to a strong start. The Bison won both diving events at the Fall Invite, with Meghan Catherwood and Natalie Penman going 1-2 in the 1-meter event, and Reggie Frias winning on the 3-meter board. In the quad meet, Penman was the top Bison on boards, and she set a PR on the 3-meter board with the ninth-best score in team history (258.55).
- The Bison men are 2-2 on the season after beating American (231-66) and Lafayette (238-62) and falling to Navy (172-117) in a quad meet on Nov. 9. Bucknell also has a close loss to Boston University in a dual that came down to the last relay.
- In the quad meet two weeks ago, Bucknell finished ahead of Lafayette in every event and in front of American in all but one.
- Shane Wynne, Andy Dorsel, and Justin DiSanto all had runner-up finishes to Navy in individual events. One of Bucknell's best races of the day came in the 200 fly, while Wynne and Dorsel finished 2-3, only four-tenths of a second apart. Dorsel was later edged by Navy's Noah Robinson by only a tenth of a second in the 200 breast, with Will Hedges taking third.
- DiSanto was a close second to Navy's Everet Andrew in the 100 free, and he tied for third in the 50 free, and he anchored both of Bucknell's relays.
- Chris Kopac posted four individual wins over the first two meets of the season. He captured the 100 and 200 free against Boston University and took the 100 breast and 400 IM, along with a close third in the 50 free, at the Fall Invite. Kopac bested all of the American and Lafayette competitors in the 200 and 500 free in the quad meet.
- Bucknell's divers are also off to strong starts, and Jack Krug, Jackson Vinarub, and Connor Thurston have already set PRs on the 3-meter board. Vinarub's 307.8 against Boston University moved him up to the No. 2 spot on Bucknell's all-time list, and Krug's 299.5 at the Fall Invite moved him up from seventh to fifth. Thurston's mark of 271.65 in the quad was just .3 away from cracking the top 10.
- This is the fourth of nine home meets for the Bison this season, culminating with the 2025 Patriot League Championships Feb. 19-22.
- Bucknell will send a contingent to the U.S. meet in Greensboro, N.C. on Dec. 4-6, and the next home meet will be on Saturday, Jan. 11 against Army West Point.
