Kattrup’s Late Strike Lifts Men’s Soccer to 1-0 Win at Army and Share of Patriot League Lead

WEST POINT, N.Y. – A bit of magic in the 85th minute from senior Waldemar Kattrup sent the Bucknell men's soccer team to a hard-fought 1-0 away win over Army West Point on Sunday afternoon at Malek Stadium at Clinton Field.
The win moved the Bison back into a share of first place in the Patriot League with three games to play. Bucknell and Boston University are both 3-1-2 for 11 points, while Loyola, Lehigh, and American are all just one point back at 3-2-1.
Army dropped to 1-5 in Patriot League play, but the Black Knights came in red hot after a big win over arch-rival Navy followed by a good 1-0 non-league victory at Princeton on Tuesday. Army had scored at least one goal in eight straight games, but the Bison back line, boosted by the return of senior center back Aidan Lawlor, limited the Black Knights to one shot on target all day.
Bucknell nearly scored in the 17th minute, but Army goalkeeper Blair Camargo made a great reflex save on Drew Roskos on a redirect from Cade Whitmire's low cross along the 6. The Bison were at it again in the second half, with close calls from Jimmy Pombor, Cohen Weaver, and Cade McGrath.
Bison keeper Freddie Lapworth's lone save was a good one, diving to his right to deny Gage Lyons, who attempted seven of Army's 10 total shots.
The game remained scoreless into the 85th minute before the Bison cashed in. Army had to clear a ball out of traffic in its own box, and Lawlor took it right back at them. After a neat little passing triangle from Lawlor to Whitmire to Kattrup, the senior teed it up on his left foot and struck a beautiful shot from 25 yards out that bent into the top left corner of the goal.
"We had a lot of two-thirds chances throughout the game and were close on a couple of occasions," said head coach Dave Brandt. "We need to be better at finishing our chances, but we finally got one. Happy for Waldo, it was a great strike in a big moment for the team. He has been so steady for us all year. Whether he starts or not, he's the same guy."
The Bison had to dodge a couple of tense moments after taking the lead. Lyons had a shot blocked but the ball fell right back to him, and he grazed the outside of the right post with his follow-up attempt. Ben Sheffield made a well-timed slide tackle on the edge of the area to dispossess Lyons in the final minute, and Bucknell defended a long throw into the box as time expired.
Bucknell finished with a 14-10 shot advantage and led 3-1 in corner kicks. Camargo tallied two saves for Army.
"Army had been playing well, so it was great to keep the clean sheet," said Brandt. "I thought perhaps up until the goal, the player of the game was Aidan Lawlor. He was great today coming back from injury. The guys know where we are in the standings and where we want to be. We feel like we could even have a few more points, but we're happy with the three today, and now we have the next two at home."
After playing its last four games on the road, the Bison host Colgate next Saturday on Senior Day at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium.
