LEWISBURG, Pa. – A slick finish by Jimmy Pombor in the 83rd minute gave the Bucknell men's soccer team a 1–0 Senior Day victory over Colgate on Saturday afternoon at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium. With the win, the Bison took over sole possession of first place in the Patriot League with two matches to play after Boston University's 2–2 draw with American Saturday afternoon. The Bison currently sit at 14 points with a 4–1–2 Patriot League record. Colgate moves to 2–3–2 in conference play, suffering its fifth consecutive defeat.
Before the match, the Bison honored its four seniors, Waldemar Kattrup, Jack Roberto, Aidan Lawlor, and Nick Prime. Pombor, a junior transfer from Lock Haven, gave the group a victorious Senior Day with his first Bucknell goal.
Neither side saw a clear opportunity in the first half with the Bison taking the lone shot on target until Pombor's goal. Cohen Weaver and David Krumov tested their luck early, firing shots from outside the box that carried just wide of goal for the half's best opportunities.
The Raiders came into the second half with more intensity after the Bison enjoyed the better spell of possession in the first half. Colgate looked to press early, but Bucknell held their defensive shape strong in the early going.
The match opened up in the final 20 minutes with Colgate getting its first big opportunity in the 72nd minute. A big ball to the corner opened up Bucknell's back line, clearing the way for a streaking Colin Hughes. A difficult ball to deal with caused his shot to float over the crossbar to keep the game scoreless.
Just minutes later, it was the Bison on the attack, forcing a save from Oliver Townend. A great delivery into the box by Krumov sent Roskos for an acrobatic header. Townsend reacted quickly with a big hand to deflect the shot off the crossbar and back into play.
Pombor's big moment came in the 83rd minute, netting his first goal in a Bison jersey. Pombor found space in transition, sending a ball into the box to Roskos toward the endline. Roskos fought off defenders before slipping a pass back to Pombor who took a touch then quickly slipped in the match-winner.
Looking for an equalizer, Colgate won a free kick in a dangerous area in the 87th minute. A curled delivery found the free head of Hughes who forced Freddie Lapworth to fully extend for a brilliant save to keep the Bison in front.
The Bison outshot the Raiders 8-6 in the match with the Raiders finishing with a 3-2 advantage in corners.
The Bison next host a tough Lafayette squad in its final home match of the regular season at Emmitt Field. The Leopards are 3-3-1, sitting at 10 points with two matches to play after this weekend.
