Men’s Soccer Finishes in 0-0 Deadlock with George Mason
9/8/2023 9:43:00 PM | Men's Soccer
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell and George Mason engaged in a defensive struggle on Friday night, and the two teams finished in a scoreless draw in non-conference men's soccer action at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium. The Bison moved to 1-2-1 on the season with the start of Patriot League play just eight days away.
Neither side could unlock the opposing defense, as the shot board finished all even at 5-5. Goalkeepers Freddie Lapworth and Jaume Salvado were only needed for one save apiece.
Bucknell was organized defensively throughout, and George Mason's only real quality look at goal came seven minutes into the second half when Asparuh Slavov struck the crossbar. Lapworth then easily gobbled up Zach Golden's follow-up attempt.
Bucknell's press caused the Patriots a few problems in the back, most notably when Zane Domsohn nearly got on the end of a loose ball in the box late in the first half. Salvado poked the ball clear momentarily, and Brennan Gac's long-range attempt toward an open goal was picked off by a defender scrambling back.
In the 68th minute, Kasper Piela sent a drive from the top of the area that took a deflection on the way in, forcing Salvado to make a diving save to his left.
The Bison had one last chance with 14 seconds left in the match when Charlie Holmes chipped a pass over the back line toward Cade McGrath, but Salvado came out to the edge of the area to collect.
Bucknell kept a clean sheet for the first time this season, and the sophomore Lapworth earned his first solo shutout as a Bison. The squad received contributions from up and down the roster, as head coach Dave Brandt used 23 players in the match. Only Lapworth and center back Jackson Sullivan played the full 90 minutes.
Bucknell travels to Saint Francis on Tuesday, and then Army West Point visits Emmitt Field next Saturday evening on the opening weekend of Patriot League action.
