Men’s Soccer Falls 1-0 at Saint Francis, Patriot League Play up Next
9/12/2023 5:43:00 PM | Men's Soccer
LORETTO, Pa. – Fabian Wagner's acrobatic overhead kick in the 72nd minute was the only scoring as unbeaten Saint Francis edged Bucknell 1-0 in non-league men's soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at Stokes SoccerPlex. The Bison limited their opponent to a single-digit shot total for the fourth time in five games this season, but one late counter-attack was the difference.
After withstanding some early pressure from the Red Flash (2-0-3), the Bison (1-3-1) saw the bulk of possession for large stretches in the match. David Krumov and Marco Valentic were both robbed on quality saves by goalkeeper Jordaine Jaeger, and late in the first half Zane Domsohn barged into the area before poking a shot wide as he was tripped up from behind.
"I can't fault anything in the performance," said head coach Dave Brandt. "The guys played well and they played hard. We had a number of chances to score and didn't, and we got stretched in one moment and they did. We're right there. Our last couple of games have been really good, but it's a young team that is still learning how to win."
The Saint Francis goal came with just under 20 minutes to go in the match. Patrick Heron took the ball down the right flank and put a cross into the area, where Wagner finished with a bicycle kick from six yards out.
Valentic nearly drew the Bison level in the 81st minute. He made a nifty move to nutmeg his defender and unleash a hard shot from outside the box, but Jaeger went full stretch to tip the shot over the bar.
In the final minute, Jackson Sullivan sent a long throw into the box that was put out for a corner, and the Red Flash were able to clear. Freddie Lapworth had to make a terrific diving save to thwart a breakaway in the final five seconds, as the Bison were pushed forward on the final corner kick.
Bucknell led 8-0 in corner kicks in the match. Lapworth was credited with two saves, while Jaeger had four.
The Bison kick off Patriot League play on Saturday night at home against Army. It will be a 7 p.m. start at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium, with coverage on ESPN+.
