Happenings
- Sunday's game will be the team's annual Vs. Cancer fundraiser in its fight against pediatric cancer. The Bison are more than 70 percent of the way to their team goal of $10,000. Fans wishing to support the cause can donate online or at Emmitt Field on Sunday. Â
- At halftime of Sunday's game, the women's soccer team will recognize KristaLee Gentile Mellott '08, who is being inducted into the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame earlier in the day.
- Coming off a 3-1 road win over La Salle on Sunday, the Bison are back at home this week to face two opponents from the Rocky Mountain State. Colorado College and Air Force will both be making their first-ever trips to Lewisburg, returning the games after Bucknell traveled west last season. Both sides will also be playing at Army West Point on opposite dates.
- All three of Bucknell's wins this season have come against opponents from the Atlantic 10 in Saint Joseph's, George Washington, and La Salle. The Bison also drew Villanova 1-1 at home last Thursday, while the two losses are both against top-25 teams in Georgetown and Pitt.
- The Bison have been formidable at home in recent years. They are 12-2-7 at Emmitt Field dating back to the start of the 2021 season, with the only losses coming to top-20 caliber opponents West Virginia and Princeton. Bucknell brings an eight-match home unbeaten streak (3-0-5) into Thursday's game against Colorado College.
- Bucknell picked up a draw and a win last week despite conceding the first goal of the game. Villanova scored just 52 seconds into the second half before Henna Andican put back a half-cleared corner kick 10 minutes later. On Sunday, La Salle had the Bison under pressure early and found a goal in the 16th minute, but the Bison stormed right back with three goals later in the first half. Reese Evans headed home a Meghan White service just 3:31 after the La Salle goal, and then Katie Schiano (25') and Kelley Francis (36') added two more.
- Schiano's goal was the first of her career. The junior right back has been stellar all season in the back four for the Bison, and on Monday she earned Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week honors.
- Teresa Deda assisted on the Schiano and Francis goals on Sunday. She now leads the Patriot League with four assists and eight points through five games. Deda also moved into sole possession of second place on Bucknell's career assists chart with 24.
- Andican leads the team with three goals, which is one behind Holy Cross' Cerys Balmer for the Patriot League lead.
- Goalkeeper Jenna Hall leads the league in saves per game (6.3). Hall made a career-high 16 saves against Pitt and had eight more against Villanova. Her .809 save percentage is third-best in the league.
- Bucknell is the two-time defending Patriot League champion. Last season, the second-seeded Bison won penalty-kick shootouts against Boston University and Army in the Patriot League Tournament, and then dropped a 1-0 overtime decision at Ohio State in the NCAA Tournament.
- Seniors Jenna Hall, Hannah Stuck, and Brooke Tracey are this year's team captains.
- Kelly Cook is in her ninth season as Bucknell's head coach, and she has led the Bison to four Patriot League championships in her first eight years. Cook owns a 74-57-20 (.556) overall record at Bucknell, including a 40-17-11 (.669) mark in Patriot League play. Cook knows the Patriot League very well, as she was a two-year captain and three-time Second Team All-Patriot League selection at Colgate, where she recorded 27 goals and 23 assists in her career. She ranked in the top 10 in program history in career points (77) and assists. As a junior in 2004, Cook (then Kelly Kuss) was named Patriot League Tournament MVP after leading the Raiders to the league title, and then her team knocked off Arizona in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, marking the first NCAA win in school and league history.
- Cook has two new assistant coaches in 2023, as former Clarion head coach Alexa Ream and goalkeepers coach PJ Steiner have joined the program.
- Colorado College is a Division I program in women's soccer and is an associate member of the Mountain West Conference.Â
- The Tigers have played a tough early season schedule and are 0-3-1 with a draw against Denver (2-2) and losses to Louisiana Tech (3-1), Colorado (2-0), and Kansas (6-0).
- Erin Ewers, Shalom Prince, and Alex Sandoval have scored the team's goals.
- Prince is the team's top returning scorer after tallying five goals and an assist in 2022.
- Regan Wallace has started all four games in goal, while Erika Upson and Zahra Cheeseman have seen backup action.
- The Tigers finished 7-7-5 overall and 4-3-4 in the Mountain West a year ago. They fell to San Jose State 1-0 in the Mountain West Tournament quarterfinals.
- Head coach Keri Sanchez is in her second year at Colorado College. Sanchez won four NCAA championships as a player at powerhouse North Carolina and had 13 caps with the U.S. Women's National Team.
- Bucknell has played Colorado College twice previously, falling both times in Colorado Springs. The Tigers won 5-0 in 2006 and 2-1 last season.
- In last year's meeting, Reese Evans gave the Bison a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute, but Josie Morales and Kaelin Enga scored second-half goals to help the Tigers come from behind. It was an even game on the stat sheet, with the shots level at 16, and saves (7-6) and corner kicks (6-5) narrowly in Bucknell's favor.
- The Falcons bring a three-match winning streak into Thursday's fixture with service academy rival Army. After dropping their season opener 3-0 at North Florida, Air Force has rebounded with wins over Stetson (3-2), Northern Colorado (2-1), and Hawaii (3-1).
- Air Force has eight goals in their last three outings, including three from Jordi Ives and two each from Mia Otero and Caeli Sherman. Addie Doyle also has a goal, and Otero and Julia Tierney have two assists each.
- Sydney Davis and Cammi Bych have both played in all four games this season, with two starts apiece. Davis led the Mountain West in save percentage (.863) last season.
- Ives scored twice in the most recent game against Hawaii. Much like Bucknell's last time out at La Salle, the Falcons allowed an early goal in that game before scoring three in a row.
- Air Force finished 7-7-4 overall and 4-4-3 in the Mountain West last season. Sherman was the team's top scorer with four goals.
- The Bison are 1-0-1 in two previous clashes with the Falcons, both coming in Colorado Springs. The two contests featured only one goal scored, as the teams played a scoreless draw in 2006 and Bucknell won 1-0 last season.
- A year ago, the Bison had a nice response two days after letting a lead slip away against Colorado College. Bucknell held Air Force to nine total shots and won it on Paige Temple's sensational free kick in the 49th minute. The game was delayed nearly two hours due to lightning in the first half.
The Road Ahead
- These are Bucknell's final two matches before the start of Patriot League play. The Bison head to Colgate for a 3 p.m. game on Saturday, Sept. 16.
