Women’s Soccer Finishes in Scoreless Draw at Holy Cross

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Jenna Hall tallied six saves and made a key play to break up a dangerous free kick with 15 seconds left in the match to help the Bucknell women's soccer team salvage a 0-0 draw at Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon. The Bison moved to 1-1-2 in Patriot League play and 6-3-3 overall, while the Crusaders are now 2-4-5 overall and 0-1-3 in the conference after playing their third straight scoreless tie.
Even though no goals went on the board, there was plenty of action at both ends as Holy Cross finished with a 16-15 shot advantage. The Bison outshot the Crusaders 10-4 in the first half, but the Crusaders flipped the script in the second stanza with a 12-5 shot edge.
Cerys Balmer turned in the game's first real chance just over 10 minutes in when her looping header off a corner kick hit the crossbar, and then Emily Bubonovich's follow-up attempt trickled in on goal. Just three minutes later, it was Bucknell's turn, as Henna Andican found space in the center of the area and forced a tough save from Julia Walsh. On the ensuing corner kick, Hannah Stuck's header required a diving stop from Walsh.
In the 37th minute, Kelley Francis settled a ball in the box and got wiped out by the sliding goalkeeper. The ball fell to Andican on the left side of the area, but she could not find the finishing touch with the goal open.
Holy Cross had Bucknell under duress right from the start of the second half, but the Bison held strong in the back. Four minutes after the resumption of play Hall made a quick-reaction save on Karenna Beckstein and then scrambled to her left to block a follow-up attempt from Ellie Zern. Olivia Perez had a third crack at it but sailed her shot over the bar.
Bucknell's best look in the second half came on a well-struck drive from outside the area off the boot of Reese Evans, but Walsh dove to her right to make the save.
Bucknell had to defend two free kicks from dangerous areas late in the match. Riley Grable's attempt from five yards outside the box in the 84th minute was driven into the wall, and then the Crusaders had another free kick from slightly farther out on the right side with the clock stopped with 15 seconds remaining.
Walsh came all the way forward for the set piece, but Hall did well to come off her line to punch Sydney Baldwin's delivery then catch it out of the air herself. Hall tried to race the ball up the pitch with no goalkeeper in place, but her long boot was ultimately broken up by the last defender back.
Hall logged her fourth shutout of the season, with three of them coming in Patriot League play. She now has 21 career clean sheets, one shy of Jessica Ratner's school record. Meanwhile, Walsh collected her third straight shutout for Holy Cross, which has conceded only one goal in four Patriot League matches.
Andican led the way with six shot attempts for the Bison, who had to play without key midfield playmaker Teresa Deda, out while serving her suspension for picking up two yellow cards in last Saturday's game at Army.
Next up for Bucknell is a home match against Navy on Friday. Opening kick is set for 7 p.m. at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium.
