Bucknell at a Glance
- On the heels of a six-game unbeaten streak, the Bison are now looking to get back in the win column after a 3-1 loss to Army and a scoreless draw at Holy Cross, both on the road, over the last two weeks.
- With five standings points, Bucknell comes into Friday's match in sole possession of fifth place. The Bison are only two points out of second place, but five teams are within two points in arrears. Navy is one of those sides looking to make a move up the table. The Mids (1-3-0) are tied with Holy Cross (0-1-3) for ninth place. Loyola (4-0-0) is the lone league unbeaten and has built a five-point cushion over second-place Boston University (2-1-1) and American (2-1-1).
- Bucknell is coming off a 0-0 deadlock at Holy Cross, marking the third straight scoreless tie for the Crusaders, who have only conceded one goal in four Patriot League matches. Goalkeeper Jenna Hall had a big day for the Bison, finishing with six saves. Hall was busy in the second half, and she made a critical play to break up a dangerous free kick with 15 seconds left in the match.
- The Bison will be glad to get all-star midfielder Teresa Deda back for Friday's match. Deda picked up two yellow cards in the Army match and had to sit out the Holy Cross game. Deda, the reigning Patriot League Midfielder of the Year, has four goals and five assists in 10 appearances this season. Her 1.3 points per game are second-most in the Patriot League behind Loyola's Baylee DeSmit (1.82), who has seven goals and six assists for 20 points in 11 games.
- Sophomore forward Henna Andican is the only other Patriot League player averaging more than a point per game (1.27). Andican leads the Bison with five goals along with four assists. She had scored in back-to-back games against American and Army before being kept off the sheet last time out at Holy Cross. She did have six shot attempts in that match, however, and has now recorded five or more shots six times this season.
- Deda (4.20) and Andican (4.00) rank 1-2 in the Patriot League in shots per game, and Bucknell's 15.1 attempts per game as a team also lead the conference.
- Reese Evans is Bucknell's third multi-goal scorer with three, and Katie Schiano, Paige Temple, and Meghan White all have a goal and three assists.
- Hall, the 2022 Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year, has an .819 save percentage to rank third in the Patriot League. Her 5.64 saves per game are the most in the conference. Saturday's shutout at Holy Cross was the 21st of her career, and she is now just one shy of Jessica Ratner's school record.
- The Bison went 5-2-1 in eight matches leading up to the conference opener. The only two losses came in succession to top-25 sides Georgetown and Pittsburgh, but after that they posted a 1-1 draw against a good Villanova team, followed by three straight wins over La Salle (3-1), Colorado College (5-2), and Air Force (2-1).
- Bucknell has scored 17 goals in its five wins this season, with a high of five in a come-from-behind 5-2 verdict over Colorado College.
- Bucknell is the two-time defending Patriot League champion. Last season, the second-seeded Bison won penalty-kick shootouts against Boston University and Army in the Patriot League Tournament, and then dropped a 1-0 overtime decision at Ohio State in the NCAA Tournament.
- Seniors Jenna Hall, Hannah Stuck, and Brooke Tracey are this year's team captains.
- Kelly Cook is in her ninth season as Bucknell's head coach, and she has led the Bison to four Patriot League championships in her first eight years. Cook owns a 77-58-22 (.561) overall record at Bucknell, including a 41-18-13 (.660) mark in Patriot League play.
- Cook has two new assistant coaches in 2023, as former Clarion head coach Alexa Ream and goalkeepers coach PJ Steiner have joined the program.
- Navy started Patriot League play with a 1-0 win over Lehigh, but since then the Mids have fallen to Loyola (1-0), Colgate (2-0), and Boston University (3-2). Interspersed was an 11-0 rout of Division III Marymount.
- Last Sunday in Annapolis, Navy erased a 2-0 deficit against Boston University, but the Terriers won it on an 85th-minute goal from Abigail McNulty. Katie Hermann (PK) and Jenna Daunt scored for the Mids. All five goals in the match came in the second half, including three in an eight-minute span.
- Navy has scored 30 goals and conceded 13 in 13 matches this season. Amanda Graziano (2G, 6A), Kat Healy (4G, 2A) and Alexa Riddle (4G, 2A) all share the team lead with 10 points. Isabella Romano, Mimi Abusham, Chiara Cosenza, and Marlee Heaven all have three goals.
- Mattie Gallagher has been the Mids' lead goalkeeper starting every game with the exception of Marymount. Gallagher has 48 saves and 15 goals against with two shutouts this season.
- Navy was picked fifth in the Patriot League preseason poll, with Riddle earning a spot on the Preseason All-Patriot League squad. She was the Patriot League Rookie of the Year in 2021 and a Third Team All-PL pick last year.
- The Mids went 8-8-3 overall and 4-5 in league play in 2022. Navy was the No. 5 seed in the Patriot League Tournament and fell at Lehigh in the quarterfinal round. It was Navy's 12th straight postseason appearance.
- Head coach Carin Gabarra, a former All-American at UC Santa Barbara and a member of the gold-medal-winning U.S. Women's National Team at the 1996 Olympics, is in her 30th season as Navy's head coach.
- Bucknell and Navy first met in 1994, and they have clashed at least once in every year since then. The Mids hold a 20-13-2 advantage in the series.
- Of Bucknell's 13 all-time wins against Navy, only four have come at home. The Bison have eight wins in Annapolis and another in Boston in the 2015 Patriot League Tournament.Â
- The 2021 season was the first time Bucknell defeated Navy twice in the same season. The Bison won 4-2 at home in the regular season and 1-0 in overtime in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals.
- These two teams met in round one of Patriot League play last season in Annapolis, and Navy walked away with a convincing 4-0 win. Rylee Donaldson struck the post in the first minute of the match, but then it was all Navy the rest of the way. Alexa Riddle scored in the seventh minute, and Jenna Daunt (28'), Caitlin Doran (56'), and Marlee Heaven (76') added goals later on. The Bison quickly regrouped, however, and never lost another game on the way to the league title.
- The last meeting at Emmitt Field was a wild one in 2021. Donaldson scored just 3:52 into the match, Kelley Francis followed 20 minutes later, and Donaldson made it 3-0 in the 57th minute. But Navy stormed back with a Caitlin Doran goal and an own goal to make it 3-2, before Teresa Deda ended it with an insurance marker for the Bison in the 86th minute.
- Bucknell had only managed as many as four goals against Navy one other time, that coming in a 4-3 home win in 2005. That game 16 years earlier was also the last time Navy conceded four times against any Patriot League opponent.
- Deda has two career goals against Navy, with the other coming in overtime in the 2021 Patriot League Tournament semifinals in Annapolis.
- After the Navy game, Bucknell has two more critical fixtures on tap next week. The Bison visit first-place Loyola on Wednesday and then host second-place Boston University the following Saturday.
