Women’s Soccer Blanks Navy 2-0 as Hall Ties School Shutout Record
10/6/2023 10:03:00 PM | Women's Soccer
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Hannah Stuck and Kelley Francis scored first-half goals, and Jenna Hall made six saves on the way to her school-record-tying 22nd career shutout as the Bucknell women's soccer team picked up a crucial three points with a 2-0 win over Navy on Friday night at rainy Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium.
The Bison improved to 7-3-3 overall and 2-1-2 in the Patriot League, while Navy dropped to 6-5-3, 1-4-0. Bucknell moved within four points of first-place Loyola, which suffered its first conference loss at Army earlier in the evening. The Bison and Greyhounds are set to meet on Wednesday in Baltimore.
Hall was locked in right from the start, as she made a tremendous diving save on a sharp-angled shot from all-league striker Alexa Riddle just under four minutes into the match. Bucknell settled in after the early scare, and long stretches of possession led to Stuck's goal in the 15th minute.
Sydney Hess passed out wide to Meghan White, whose long service into the center of the box was headed home by Stuck. It was the second goal of the season and fifth of her career for the senior midfielder.
Both teams had good chances in the moments following the opening goal. Navy's Mimi Abusham brought down a long service and found herself all alone from close range as the offside flag stayed down, but her shot struck the outside of the goalpost.
Paige Temple's low rocket from outside the area forced a diving save from Mattie Gallagher as a soaking rain started to fall. Hall made a similarly tricky save at the other end on a hard shot from distance that skipped off the wet surface.
Bucknell doubled its lead with just 3:46 left in the first half. Henna Andican sent in a long cross from near the right touch line, and a Navy defender could not get much on a headed clearance attempt. Francis, who made her second straight start in the midfield, pounced on the loose ball and scored from just outside the 6-yard box.
The Bison outshot Navy 10-6 in the opening 45 minutes and nearly added a third goal just 35 seconds into the second half after some nice build-up play. Teresa Deda, who tied Andican for game-high honors with five shot attempts, curled one barely over the bar.
Hall's best save of the night game 63rd minute on a scramble in the box. With bodies everywhere, the ball fell to Amanda Graziano in the center of the area, but Hall charged well off her line to smother the attempt.
Bucknell dodged a bullet in the 73rd minute when Navy was awarded a penalty kick, but Katie Herrmann's shot from the spot went high and wide of the target.
Bucknell's back four defended flawlessly from there, and the Bison were able to see out a win that extended their home unbeaten streak to 12 (7-0-5).
Hall's 22nd career clean sheet ties her with Jessica Ratner, who played from 2013-16 and like Hall was a Patriot League championship goalkeeper.
Bucknell finished the fast-paced match with a 20-16 edge in shots, while Navy held a 5-3 margin in corner kicks.
Bucknell and Loyola get together on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Ridley Athletic Complex. The two teams played to a scoreless draw last year in a sensational goalkeeper battle between Hall and Loyola's all-conference keeper Paige Sim.
