Women’s Soccer Downs League-Leading Loyola 1-0, Hall Breaks Shutout Mark with Flurry of Late Saves

BALTIMORE, Md. – Paige Temple scored just over three minutes into the match, and record-setting goalkeeper Jenna Hall and the Bucknell defense took it from there as the Bison picked up a critical 1-0 win over first-place Loyola on Wednesday night at the Ridley Athletic Complex. Bucknell jumped into second place in the Patriot League table and is now just one point behind the Greyhounds for the top spot.
Hall made eight saves, including three highlight-reel stops in a hold-your-breath final minute of the match, on the way to her school-record 23rd career shutout. Hall tied Jessica Ratner's mark in last week's 2-0 win over Navy, and in front of a large crowd in Baltimore she broke the mark in style with one of the best performances of her career.
Loyola entered the night a perfect 8-0 at home with a 19-2 goal differential, but the Bison stunned the Greyhounds with a well-constructed goal on the first shot of the night for either side just 3:09 into the match. Teresa Deda delivered a long cross into the box from the left side, Hannah Stuck one-timed a perfectly weighted pass through two Loyola defenders, and Temple smashed her shot into the back of the net for her second goal of the season.
The Greyhounds saw most of the ball the rest of the way, but the Bison back four of Meghan White, Brooke Tracey, Eva Frankovic, and Katie Schiano were rock-solid. When Loyola's dangerous attack, led by Patriot League scoring leader Baylee DeSmit, did find some space, Hall came to the rescue.
Hall made a double save on Malia Tarazon in the 27th minute to keep it 1-0 at the half, and then her best saves came much later on in the night.
In the 62nd minute, Hall dove to parry away a shot from Delaney DeMartino, and Kelley Francis tracked back to clean up the rebound. Soon after, Hall went up high to punch away a hard drive from Elizabeth Gallagher, and then she was well-positioned for a stop on a Zoe Willis header off a free kick.
Things really got tense in the final minute as the Greyhounds threw numbers forward looking for an equalizer. A service into the box fell to DeMartino for a clean look, but Hall closed down the angle and made a point-blank save, and then slapped away a rebound attempt. Loyola sent another long direct ball into the box where DeSmit got a step on her defender, but Hall made a game-saving stop with a dive to her right. The ball went out for a corner kick, and Willis' last-second header with bodies flying everywhere was tipped over the bar by Hall on the game's final touch.
"I am so proud of the whole group, it took a complete team effort tonight to get three points on the road against a really good team," said head coach Kelly Cook. "We tried to hunt for a second goal and had a couple of chances, but we really wanted the shutout and as we got closer to the end we sat in and defended with all we had. The back line was great, and of course Jenna made the big saves that we've come to expect from here. What a great way for her to get the shutout record, it's something she has earned through a ton of hard work."
Loyola finished with a 20-4 edge in shots, including six each from DeSmit and Tarazon. After starting 4-0 in Patriot League play, the Greyhounds (9-4, 4-2) have now dropped consecutive games to Army and Bucknell.
Boston University started the night in second place but lost 1-0 to Holy Cross, so the Bison (8-3-3, 3-1-2) jumped the Terriers into the No. 2 spot and pulled within one point of Loyola. Bucknell and Boston University meet on Saturday afternoon at Emmitt Field.

Here's a look at the Paige Temple goal. Teresa Deda sent in the long cross, and Hannah Stuck with the great touch through to Temple for the finish. Great goal gets us on the board early! #rayBucknell
