LEWISBURG, Pa. – Senior back Matthew Owusu scored his first career goal, but it was not enough as the Bucknell men's soccer team fell 3-1 to Loyola in a Patriot League match at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium on Wednesday night.
Milan Miric, Danilo Seglio, and Jake Sweeney scored for the Greyhounds, who improved to 2-1-6 overall and 2-0-1 in the Patriot League. The Bison fell to 1-7-1, 0-3-0.
Bison goalkeeper Freddie Lapworth made a point-blank save with his nose to rob Rolando Onu just over five minutes into the game, but Loyola found the first goal moments later. Seglio's corner kick fell to Miric in the center of the area, and Miric toe-poked it home.
Loyola made it 2-0 in the 19th minute when Sean McAvoy played a long ball over the top to Seglio, who finished past a charging Lapworth for his first goal of the season.
Jack Roberto kept it 2-0 when he cleared Thomas Gray's header off the goal line, and that proved big when the Bison halved their deficit with 2:39 left in the half. Jakub Samelko won a ball back at the edge of the area and slipped a pass over to Mason Lillis, who was dragged down in the box. Owusu stepped up to the penalty spot and smashed it decisively into the left side-netting.
Matthew Owusu makes no mistake with a rocket from the spot. His first career goal is a big one late in the half that makes it 2-1 at intermission. #rayBucknell

The second half was played fairly evenly as Bucknell pushed for an equalizer, but the wind came out of its sails in the 75th minute. Another long ball played out of the back all the way to the edge of the area forced a Bison defender under duress to try to tap the ball back to the Lapworth, but Sweeney stuck a boot in and propelled the ball across the line to make it a 3-1 game.
One of Bucknell's best looks in the run of play came from Samelko in the 84th minute, but his hard shot from the center of the area was saved by Dylan van der Walt.
Loyola finished with a 14-8 shot advantage and a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. Lapworth made four saves before giving way to freshman Rex Alphen, who made his collegiate debut with nine minutes remaining. Van der Walt stopped three shots for Loyola.
Bucknell plays at home again on Saturday night, as American comes to Emmitt Field for a 7 p.m. contest.
