Men’s Soccer Suffers Harsh 1-0 Loss at Navy
9/24/2023 3:45:00 PM | Men's Soccer
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – A strong performance on the road from the Bucknell men's soccer team went unrewarded on Sunday, as David Jackson's lofted cross slipped inside the back post in the 87th minute to lift Navy to a 1-0 Patriot League win at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
Bucknell is 0-2 in Patriot League play despite possession and shot advantages against both Army and Navy. The Midshipmen, the reigning league champions, improved to 1-0-1 in the PL and 4-4-1 overall.
After an evenly played first half, Bucknell nearly went ahead early in the second half. Just 40 seconds in, Cade McGrath laid a ball off to Waldemar Kattrup, whose hard, rising shot sailed over the bar. Less than five minutes later the Bison had the best chance of the day for either side, a header from Charlie Holmes deep in the area that forced Navy goalkeeper Pierce Holbrook to make a quick reaction save.
Navy's Andrew Schug was denied on a point-blank save by Freddie Lapworth 10 minutes into the match, but that was one of the few good scoring chances conceded by Bucknell.
Navy did earn a corner kick with four minutes to go, and the Bison were able to clear as far as Jason Aoyama out near midfield. Aoyama played a ball out wide to Jackson, who popped a hopeful cross high in the air that somehow sailed over the reach of Lapworth and just inside the back post.
David Krumov did get a good look at a potential equalizer with 35 seconds left, but his low drive from the top of the 18 just skimmed wide of the left post.
"I'm gutted for the guys; I thought we played really well and there is no other way to describe it than just a really cruel result," said head coach Dave Brandt. "We know we have to find ways to create more chances. I think we are becoming a good defensive team despite some of the things that have happened to us. There's nothing to do except keep fighting, and we will."
Bucknell finished with a 12-11 shot advantage while holding Navy to just two shots on frame. Lapworth was credited with one save and Holbrook three.
The Bison will be at home for their next two matches, starting with Loyola on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
