Justin Carey, who most recently served as the head coach at Eastern Mennonite University, has been named the newest assistant coach for the Bucknell men's soccer staff.
"We are super excited to welcome Justin Carey and his wife Kelli to our staff at Bucknell," said head coach Dave Brandt. "I have known of Justin for several years now and have always been impressed by his work ethic and the way he carries himself, both as person and coach. He was a top player, and comes to us with experience as a Division I assistant, and also as a head coach at the Division III level."Â
Carey was named head coach at Eastern Mennonite in fall of 2022, and he led the Royals to three consecutive ODAC Conference Tournament appearances from 2023-25. The program achieved that mark for the first time in since 2016-18.
In his second season at the helm, Carey led the Royals to a fifth-place finish in the ODAC after being picked 13th in the preseason polls. He also led the program to a 7-7-4 record after a 1-10-6 record in 2022. Carey and the Royals posted winning records in the regular season in each of his final three seasons.
Carey is a 2019 graduate of Mary Washington University where he started in 65 games and scored 18 career goals. He amassed 40 points and over 3700 minutes on the field for the Eagles. Carey was a 2018 First Team All-American, a two-time Academic All-American, a two-time All-South Atlantic selection and a 2018 Virginia Sports Information Directors Player of the Year.
Prior to his time at Eastern Mennonite, Carey served as an assistant and goalkeepers coach at Stetson University. He led goalkeeper development and assisted in recruiting. He assisted in recruiting for the Class of 2025 that had the ASUN Freshman of the Year, two First Team All-ASUN selections and four ASUN All-Freshman in 2021. Carey also led the program's community outreach, working with local youth players and organizing the team's community service.
Carey first entered the coaching realm as a graduate assistant at Eastern Mennonite in fall 2019 where he led scouting reports and heavily assisted in recruiting. Carey also spearheaded academic initiatives, beginning a study hall for first-year athletes.
Upon his return to Eastern Mennonite in 2022, he furthered his work in academic success and community service initiatives. He established a leadership program for the senior class and created a study hall program. From spring 2022 to fall 2023, the team improved its GPA from 2.8 to 3.1. Carey helped establish after-school programs with local churches and schools, and created an annual banquet for the program.
Carey brings a strong work ethic, disciplined and detail-oriented philosophies to the Bucknell staff. In his four seasons as the head coach at Eastern Mennonite, the Royals led the conference in fewest fouls per game and yellow cards per game.
"The right guy, and a fantastic addition to our staff; he is already hard at work in all things Bucknell Men's Soccer, and we all look forward to the players return to campus in early August," said Brandt.
