REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. – The Bucknell women's golf team is off to a strong start in its first away tournament of the season. Featuring a lineup with three freshmen, a sophomore, and a senior, the Bison posted rounds of 311 and 304 on Monday and stand in fifth place in a field of 14 teams at the Hornet Classic, hosted by Delaware State at Kings Creek Country Club.
Sophomore Paige Richter is the low Bison after 36 holes, with rounds of 74 and 75 putting her in a tie for 12th place out of 75 players. She had a consistent day, making 27 pars and a birdie with nothing worse than a bogey over 36 holes
Freshman Sofia Nogalo, who finished T-3rd at the Bucknell Invitational last week shot 77-78. Classmate Lila Smith, who fired a school-record 68 last week, bounced back from an opening-round 83 with a 3-over 74 in the afternoon 18.
Senior Cristina Canales shot 80-77, and freshman Katherine Vice posted 80-83.
Howard raced well ahead of the pack with rounds of 293 and 283 for an 8-over total of 576. Second-place Sacred Heart is 20 shots in arrears, with Lehigh two shots father back. Long Island (610) and Bucknell (615) round out the top five, with Monmouth lurking five shots behind the Bison in sixth.
The 615 tally is the 10th-best 36-hole total in team history and the sixth-best on a road course.
Sacred Heart's Margot Rouquette (72-70) and Lehigh's Stefania Fedun (70-72) are tied for the individual lead at even park. Howard's Morgan Horrell and LIU's Emily Byrne are one shot back. The low round of the day was a 3-under 68 from Howard's Marley Franklin, who bounced back nicely from an opening-round 80.
The third and final round gets underway at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday with a shotgun start.
