LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell rowing team is headed back to Lake Quinsigamond for the 2023 Patriot League Championships, which will be contested on Friday morning. Preliminary heats begin at 8 a.m., with finals starting at 1:20 p.m. Both sessions will be streamed live on ESPN+.
The Patriot League Championships feature a nine-team field, with Georgetown and MIT competing as associate members of the conference in the sport of women's rowing. All nine teams will send out three boats, a Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight, and Varsity Four. Points are weighted in favor of the Varsity Eight, and in the event of a tie after all three finals, the championship would be awarded to the winner of the Varsity Eight. The championship team receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships, which will be held in Cherry Hill, N.J., on May 26-28.
PATRIOT LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS SCORING FORMAT:
Varsity Four: 9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1
Second Varsity Eight: 18-16-14-12-10-8-6-4-2
Varsity Eight: 27-24-21-18-15-12-9-6-3
Bucknell has featured one of the Patriot League's top teams since the league began contesting a rowing championship in 2005. The Bison captured seven straight league titles from 2006-12 and have never finished lower than fourth. Bucknell has placed second in the team standings in each of the last three Patriot League Championships (the event was not held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic).
Last year's championship was a special one for the Bison, who not only captured gold medals in the Varsity Eight for the first time since 2012, but did so by the second-largest margin of victory in the history of the event.
Bucknell has performed well throughout this spring, racing in five different events since Apr. 1. One of those regattas was a double dual on Lake Quinsigamond on Apr. 15. All three of Bucknell's championship boats defeated Holy Cross and Sacred Heart while placing behind Rhode Island.
In the two weeks since then, the Bison defeated Lehigh in four races at the Skotedis Cup, and then they swept three races from Villanova while going 2-2 against Delaware. The Varsity Four won both of its races against the Wildcats and Blue Hens and was later named the Patriot League Boat of the Week.
Bucknell Varsity Eight is seeded third behind Boston University and Navy heading into the 2023 Championships. The Second Varsity Eight and Varsity Four are both seeded fourth behind Navy, Boston University, and Georgetown.
