WORCESTER, Mass. – Led by a bronze-medal finish from the Second Varsity Eight, the Bucknell rowing team took in third place at the 2023 Patriot League Championships, hosted by Holy Cross on Friday on Lake Quinsigamond.
The Bison also picked up fourth-place finishes from the Varsity Eight and Varsity Four, and the squad tallied 38 points in the team standings. Navy and Boston University both accrued 51 points, and the Midshipmen earned the championship based on its win in the Varsity Eight. Georgetown placed fourth with 34 points, followed by MIT (32), Holy Cross (24), Colgate (20), Lehigh (8), and Loyola (6).
All three of Bucknell's crews comfortably qualified for their respective Grand Finals during the morning preliminary races. The Varsity Four led off the championship round later in the afternoon, and the Bison occupied second place at the 1,000-meter mark, trailing only Boston University. The Terriers went on to win in a time of 7:36.176, with Navy and Georgetown both passing the Bison (7:45.267) in the back half of the race.
The 2V8+ also started out fast and was second to Boston University at the halfway mark. Bucknell and Navy were even in their battle for second place with 500 meters to go, before the Mids pulled ahead by about five seats to claim the silver medals. Boston University (6:50.194) won by open water, followed by Navy and Bucknell (6:59.206) with Georgetown four seconds further back in fourth.
That 2V8+ finish was critical for Navy, as it meant the Mids could take the team title with a win in the Varsity Eight, the final race of the day. They did just that, pulling away late to clip Boston University by nearly four seconds. The Mids finished in 6:36.892, followed by Boston University, MIT, Bucknell (6:49.968), Georgetown, and Colgate.
The Bison have never finished lower than fourth since the Patriot League Championships debuted in 2005. Bucknell won seven straight titles from 2006-12 and had placed second in each of the previous three years.
