BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Sophomore Anna Lajos pulled out a 6-4 win in the third set against Lehigh's Megha Dania to clinch a dramatic 4-3 victory for the Bucknell women's tennis team Saturday afternoon. It was one of several matches that went down to the wire against the Mountain Hawks, as the Bison took two of three in doubles and three of six in singles.
Lajos, playing at No. 2 singles, lost the first set 6-3, but she battled back to a 7-6 (4) win in the second and completed the comeback in the third to even Bucknell's Patriot League record at 2-2. It was Lajos' team-leading 15th singles win of the season. Dania led the Mountain Hawks with an 8-3 singles record going into the match.
Freshman Abby Platt also earned a singles win, defeating senior Junmoke James 7-5, 6-1 at the No. 4 position. Caroline Marcus was leading 5-0 at No. 6 singles before winning by defeault.
Platt and Lajos also earned doubles wins while playing alongside Whitney King and Tyne Miller, respectively. King and Platt defeated Dania and her sister, Anushka, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles to seal the point. Miller and Lajos won by the same score in the No. 2 position.
King forced a third set at No. 1 singles by posting a clean 6-0 win in the second, but Lehigh's Second Team All-Patriot League selection from a year ago, Hamsa Javagal, won the tiebreaker in the third.
Bucknell snapped its four-match losing skid with the victory and is now 10-11 overall on the season. The Mountain Hawks fell to 2-3 in league play with the loss, falling behind the Bison in the standings.
Bucknell returns to action next Saturday, April 15 to face Army at noon in West Point, N.Y.
