BOSTON, Mass. – The Bucknell women's lacrosse team ran into a hot goalie on Saturday at Nickerson Field, as Reilly Agres tallied 16 saves to lead Boston University to a wire-to-wire 13-9 win over the Bison. Claire Gola scored five of the Terriers' first six goals on the way to a 7-1 lead, and then the hosts held off a late Bucknell rally.
Allie Boyce, Taylor Kopan, and Alex Nesbitt scored two goals apiece for the Bison, and goalie Symone Ryans had a strong game of her own with 10 saves. Bucknell fell to 6-9 on the season and 2-6 in the Patriot League, while the Terriers improved to 8-8, 3-5, and kept their postseason hopes alive with one game left in the regular season.
Bucknell trailed by as many as six goals, the last at 11-5 midway through the third quarter, but the Bison got back in it by scoring four of the next five goals. Kopan and Taylor McClain scored a minute apart late in the third to make it 11-7.
Agres made a big save late in the third, and then Bucknell missed several good looks with a player advantage early in the fourth. Agres made a save on a free-position attempt, and then moments later Hannah Tilier scored to give Boston University a 12-7 lead.
Caitlin McHale won the draw control which led to Boyce's free-position goal. Ryans made two tough saves and Ella Payer and Emily Baird both forced turnovers, but McLain hit the post and Agres made three more stops to keep the margin at 12-8.
The Bison finally cut the deficit to three when Katie Browne finished a Megan Krestinski feed to make it 12-9 with 3:02 to play.
The Terriers won the ensuing draw, and a key foul on Bucknell with 1:33 to go reset the shot clock to 90 seconds. Boston University was able to burn off the rest of the clock, and Jennifer Barry added one more goal just before the final horn to make the final 13-9.
Bucknell outshot Boston University 33-28 and led 14-12 in draw controls and 19-8 in ground balls. Browne led the Bison with five draw controls and also had two ground balls along with a goal and an assist. Payer caused three turnovers, and Madison Parke picked up four ground balls.
The Bison wrap up the regular season on Thursday at home against Holy Cross at 4 p.m.
