Marist Makes Final Push in 14-11 Win over Men’s Lax
3/4/2023 2:35:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's lacrosse team fought back from a five-goal deficit to tie the game in the fourth quarter, but Marist outscored the Bison 4-1 over the final 5:55 to take a 14-11 win on a blustery day at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
Dutch Furlong recorded three goals and an assist, and Jack Dudas notched his first career hat trick for the Bison, who fell to 1-4 on the season. Marist (1-4) received six goals from Jojo Pirreca, with two coming in that late push.
Will Hopkins, Furlong, and Michael Meyer all scored in a 65-second span in the opening quarter to stake the Bison to an early 4-1 lead. But Bucknell wouldn't score again for nearly 30 minutes of game time, and Marist ran off eight straight goals to go up 9-4.
It was still a five-goal spread after Pirreca made it 10-5 with 6:19 left in the third, before freshman Chris Begier's first collegiate goal ignited Bucknell's rally.
Cam Doolan's extra-man goal made it 10-8 after three periods. Furlong's nifty roll and diving shot at the top of the crease brought the Bison within 10-9 early in the fourth, and then just over a minute later Begier's feed from X led to a rocket from Dudas that tied the game at 10-apiece with 10:37 still to play.
Marist goalie Noble Smith made two big saves to keep it tied, and then Jake Deacy finished a Jamison Embury feed to give Marist the lead back with 5:55 to go. Pirreca and Joshua Balcarcel followed 24 seconds apart, and the Red Foxes had a 13-10 lead with just 4:15 to go.
Hopkins got one back for the Bison, but Pirreca's sixth of the day finished the scoring with 1:16 remaining.
Meyer (1-2-3), Hopkins (2-0-2), and Begier (1-1-2) – all freshmen – also had multi-point games for the Bison, who outshot Marist 44-39.
Freshman Jaz Zanelli went the distance in goal for Bucknell and finished with 10 saves. Smith had nine stops for the Red Foxes, who defeated the Bison for the first time in eight all-time meetings.
This was Bucknell's final non-conference game of the regular-season. The Bison open Patriot League play at home next Saturday against Boston University at 11 a.m.
