HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Bucknell women's lacrosse team held a 9-6 lead with nine minutes left in the first half, but an ensuing 8-0 Colgate run that lasted more than 21 minutes led to a 16-13 win for the Raiders at Andy Kerr Stadium Wednesday evening.
Freshman Caroline Panzirer scored eight of Colgate's 16 goals, while freshman Megan Krestinski and sophomore Allie Boyce scored four apiece for the Bison. Emily Baird added two more goals for Bucknell along with three caused turnovers, a pair of ground balls and a pair of draw controls.
Colgate led 20-13 in draw controls and outshot the Bison 35-25. Bucknell goalie Symone Ryans finished with 13 saves. Catie Lang totaled eight for the Raiders after taking over in the second quarter.
It was a fast-paced first half, as the two teams combined for nine goals in the first quarter and 20 by halftime. Krestinski and Panzirer combined for nine of the game's first 12 scores. Boyce and Aliza Thir scored back-to-back goals within 24 seconds of each other to give Bucknell a 9-6 lead, its largest advantage of the game, with 9:35 to play in the first half.
Colgate swung the momentum, however, and scored five unanswered goals at the end of the second quarter and tallied the first three of the second half to grab a 14-9 lead by the five-minute mark of the third frame.
Katie Browne finally snapped Bucknell's drought by scoring on a fast break in transition with 2:30 to go in the third, cutting the deficit to 14-10. With the score, the Bison broke a school record by scoring 10 or more goals in nine consecutive games.
Boyce added two more goals over the final two minutes of the third, scoring unassisted with 1:42 to go and capitalizing on a free position shot with 48 seconds remaining to make it a two-goal game entering the final frame. It was Bucknell's second 3-0 run of the game.
Things slowed down considerably for both teams in the fourth quarter, as they posted just five shots each and totaled just three goals over the final 15 minutes. Bucknell was unable to cut into the lead any further until just 6:20 remained and Baird scored her second of the game as well as her 16th of the season.
With four more goals on Wednesday, Boyce has now scored eight over the last two games. She currently ranks second in the Patriot League in the category. Krestinski's four goals were a season high, and she now has two hat tricks during her rookie campaign. Her twin sister, Molly Krestinski, scored twice for Colgate on Wednesday.
Bucknell returns home to Graham Field for a 1 p.m. game against Lehigh on Saturday, April 1. The Bison will be celebrating Alumni Appreciation Day.
