Bucknell at a Glance
- The Bison look to bounce back from a tough mid-week loss at Pittsburgh when they head to North Carolina for three games this weekend. Bucknell will play a pair of games against Western Michigan and one against North Carolina A&T, all at the historic World War Memorial Stadium in Greensboro.
- On Tuesday at Pitt, the Bison allowed a third-inning grand slam but came back to score seven unanswered runs to take an 8-4 lead. Jacob Corson's 3-run homer in the sixth provided the four-run lead, but a bout of bullpen wildness in the eighth led to a five-run inning and the Panthers went on to win 11-8.
- Last weekend, the Bison took 2 of 3 games at the Swig & Swine College Classic in Charleston, S.C. Bucknell fell 9-1 to Boston College on Friday but came back to beat Ball State 7-2 and Merrimack 12-3.
- Including the season-opening three-game series at No. 5 Louisville, all five of Bucknell's losses have come against teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference.
- Bucknell's 7-2 win over Ball State on Saturday was an impressive one. The Cardinals are the preseason favorite in the Mid-America Conference and went 3-1 at the Swig & Swine, including a walk-off win over Rutgers. Chris DiFiore pitched six strong innings for his first win in two seasons – the 2022 Patriot League Preseason Pitcher of the Year threw only two innings last season before being shut down with an injury – and Theo Farynick and Ryan Osinski combined for three scoreless innings in relief. Jacob Terwilliger and Grant Voytovich hit opposite-field home runs to power the offense.
- Bucknell pounded out 12 runs on 12 hits in Sunday's 12-3 rout of Merrimack. The game was tied at 1-1 until Tyler Dunn put the Bison ahead for good with a 3-run homer. Bucknell's 7-8-9 hitters – Mason Kelly, Jake Wortman, and Terwilliger – combined to go 7-for-13 with six runs scored. Tyler O'Neill went 5.2 innings for the win, and Nick Mulvey recorded the final 10 outs for his first save.
- Sean Keys is leading the Bison in hitting with a .320 average through seven games and has at least one hit in five of the seven. Keys has three doubles and a home run among his seven hits, giving him a team-best .560 slugging percentage. His homer was a moon shoot, hitting halfway up the batter's eye an estimated 433 feet away in Bucknell's 5-3 loss at Louisville.
- Leadoff hitter Jacob Corson is off to a 4-for-18 start at the plate, but he leads the Patriot League with a .533 on-base percentage thanks to eight walks and four hit-by-pitches. Corson reached base four more times against Pitt, including his second home run of the season.
- Grant Voytovich also has two home runs this season to tie Corson for the team lead.
- Defensively, the Bison have been charged with only four errors through seven games.
- The Bison and Broncos will be meeting for the first time this weekend.
- Western Michigan finished 18-36 overall and 15-24 in the Mid-American Conference last season. The Broncos returned the 2022 MAC Freshman of the Year in outfielder Dylan Nevar and a Second Team All-MAC first baseman Cade Sullivan.
- Western Michigan was swept in a three-game series at No. 1 LSU to start the season, and then the Broncos dropped all three at Northern Kentucky last weekend. The first two of those losses came in extra innings, and then the Norse ran away with game three 27-4.
- Outfielder Will Morrison leads the team with a .300 batting average (6-20) thanks to a 5-for-7 surge over his last two games.
- Third baseman Gavin Doyle has a team-high two home runs, coming each of his last two games. Greg Budig, Cade Sullivan, and Ben Campos have also left the park.
- Lefthander Dane Armbrustmacher, who is tentatively scheduled to start against Bucknell on Saturday, struck out eight in six innings against NKU in his last start and has 14 Ks in his first two appearances of the season.
- Relief pitcher Hayden Berg has a 1.23 ERA in two scoreless outings, covering 7.1 innings
- The Aggies started the 2023 season with a three-game sweep of Maryland-Eastern Shore but their have dropped five straight since then. They were swept in a three-game series by Appalachian State and also have single-game setbacks against Davidson and South Carolina.
- North Carolina A&T has a .276 team batting average with four regulars hitting .333 or better. Anthony Hennings has hit in every game and leads the way with a .361 average. Tre Williams is hitting .350, while Cort Maynard and TJ Ash are both at .333.
- The Aggies pitching staff has combined for 82 strikeouts in 72 innings, with double-digit Ks in five of their eight contests.
- Connor Blantz, a Strasburg, Pa., native, has been the team's top pitcher thus far. In two relief outings totaling 8.0 innings, he has allowed two runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts and no walks.
- Bucknell and North Carolina have met three times previously, all in a three-game set in Greensboro in 2018. The Bison took 2 of 3, with all three games nailbiters. Bucknell took the first two 5-4 and 7-5, before the Aggies rallied late for a 7-6 win in the series finale.
- After 10 straight road games to start the season, the Bison are slated to play four times at Depew Field next week. Marist will be in town for the home opener on Wednesday, March 8 and then Rhode Island is in town for a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday.
