
Softball Defeats Rider in Extra Innings

COLLEGE PARK, Md.- The Bucknell Bison softball team (8-15) defeated Rider 3-2 in extra innings and battled #22 Maryland to a 3-0 loss on Saturday.
The Bison clinched the comeback win over Rider 3-2. Bucknell trailed 2-0 until two extra-base hits in the sixth inning tied the game. Savannah Jones stroked an RBI single in the eighth inning to give Bucknell the lead. Kaiya Burton shut down the Broncs to seal the win. Savannah Jones started against Maryland and pitched superbly. An error in the fifth inning extended the Terrapins' inning and allowed Maryland to build a 3-0 lead. Bucknell has baserunners but could not equalize with the Big 10 team.

Madison Roukey started in the circle for the Bison.
Rider threatened in the first inning by loading the bases with two singles and a hit by pitch. Madison Roukey stayed strong and escaped without yielding any runs.
Zoie Smith led off the second inning with a sensational double, but three straight outs left her stranded.
Rider broke the deadlock in the fourth inning with a double and a single to score. Kaiya Burton replaced Roukey and prevented the incumbent runner from crossing home plate.
The Broncs tallied another run in the fifth inning using the single and double combo for a 2-0 lead.
The Bison counterattacked in the top of the sixth inning. MaKenzie Hilling walked, and with two outs, Zoie Smith tripled to right center to score her. Noelle Gardon followed with a double to score Smith and tie the game at 2-2.
Rider had a chance to win the game in the seventh inning when the winning run advanced to third on a wild pitch. Burton rose to the challenge by obtaining a strikeout and a fly-out to send the game to extra innings.
To start the eighth inning, due to the international tiebreaker rules, Annabella Hawkins was placed on second. Chase Knapp sacrificed her to third base. With two outs, Savannah Jones singled to score Hawkins for the 3-2 lead.
In their half of the eighth inning, Rider also successfully sacrificed their runner to third. Burton, however, remained calm and induced two quick outs to win the game.

Neither team provided any threat for the next three innings, as both pitchers locked down the opposition.
All the scoring occurred in the bottom of the fifth inning. A leadoff walk set the table. Two grounders advanced the runner to third. With two outs, a grounder came back to the mound. Jones knocked the ball down but threw wide of first base. The runner on third scored, and the batter ended up on second. A triple scored another run, and Burton entered the circle in relief. A wild pitch scored the third run. Burton stabilized and allowed no further runs, but Maryland was up 3-0.
The Bison singled twice in the sixth inning, but a double play and a fly-out ended any opportunities.
