GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Freshman Andres Barraza made five birdies on the way to a career-best, 3-under par 69, leading the Bucknell men's golf team to a 1-under total of 287 on Tuesday in the final round of the Loyola Intercollegiate at Palm Valley Golf Club. The Bison compiled an 862 total for 54 holes -- the fifth-best mark in team history -- and finished the tournament in a tie for sixth place alongside Missouri State.
Bucknell began the final round in fourth place and played in the final foursomes along with Marquette, Wright State, and Utah Valley. But seven teams in the field posted team scores of 8-under or better, and even though the Bison posted a red figure themselves, they dropped two spots on the leaderboard.
Utah Valley tallied a 12-under 276 to edge out Marquette by one shot. Utah Valley finished with a 21-under 843 for the tournament. Wright State, the 36-hole leader, slipped to third despite shooting 8-under and getting a hole-in-one from Cole Corder. Marshall and Loyola closed with 276 and 277, respectively, to jump past Bucknell into fourth and fifth.
Barraza's first collegiate under-par round featured five birdies and only two bogeys. He birdied his final hole of the day, the par-5 2nd, to break 70 for the first time as a Bison. Jackson Bussell, coming off a second-round 68, closed with a 1-under 71. Bussell birdied four of his first eight holes and shot 33 on the front nine. He was the low Bison for the tournament, finishing T-17th with a 3-under 213 total.
Also for the Bison on Tuesday, Michael Rudnick shot 73, Blake Wisdom carded a 74, and James Key finished with a 78. The Bucknell quintet compiled 18 birdies in round three and 46 for the tournament.
Lucas Scherf of Drake was the medalist with a 12-under 204. Scherf took the lead with a second-roud 63 and closed with a 69 to win by three shots over Utah Valley's Caden Weber and the Wright State duo of Corder and Tyler Goecke.
Bucknell is back in action on March 13-14 at the Bash at the Beach, hosted by Appalachian State at the Surf Golf and Beach Club in North Myrtle Beach, S.C.
