About the Bison
- The Bucknell men's golf team tees it up in the 2023 calendar year for the first time starting Sunday at the Loyola Intercollegiate at Palm Valley GC in Arizona. The Bison have posted some very good scores on this track in recent years and are hoping to build on a solid finish to the fall season.
- Head coach Mike Binney will bring Jackson Bussell, Blake Wisdom, Michael Rudnick, Andres Barraza, and James Key to Arizona.
- Seniors Wisdom (72.1) and Bussell (72.4) ranked 1-2 on the squad in scoring average during the fall season. The duo combined to post seven rounds under par, led by Wisdom's 67 at the Bucknell Invitational. Wisdom finished in the top 10 in three of Bucknell's five fall tournaments, finishing with rounds of 70-76-69 in a T-5th finish at the Nassau Invitational, where the Bison finished third as a team.
- Bussell's top fall finish was T-12th at the Alex Lagowitz Memorial Invitational at Colgate, with rounds of 72-69-73.
- Rudnick enjoyed a strong finish to the fall, placing T-8th at the Bucknell Invitational and T-11th at the Nassau Invitational in the final two events of the season. He averaged 73.5 in four fall tournaments, 72.2 in those last two outings.
- Barraza (74.0), Key (74.4), and James Robbins (75.2) headline a promising freshman class that all had bright moments in the fall.
The Bison at the Loyola InvitationalÂ
- This will be Bucknell's third appearance in Loyola's February event at Palm Valley.
- The first came in February 2020, and that proved to be the team's final event of the season, as collegiate athletics shut down a few weeks later due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Bucknell performed very well that year, finishing sixth out of 19 teams with some record-setting scores. The Bison tallied a 6-under 858, which was the best 54-hole score in relation to par in team history. The 5-under 283 was the third-best 18-hole score in relation to par. Chris Tanabe posted a 5-under 211 to finish T-8th. Jackson Bussell (+1), Blake Wisdom (+2), Peter Bradbeer (+2), and Jason Lohwater (+3) all just missed red numbers for the week.
- Bucknell returned to Palm Valley last spring and finished eighth in a field of 18 teams with a 1-under 863 total. The team's 5-under 18-hole score of 283 in the first and third rounds were tied for third-best in school history in relation to par. The 863 composite was the fourth-best 54-hole score in school history, and the 1-under total was second-best in relation to par in team annals.
- Lohwater was the low Bison with rounds of 70-70-72 for a 4-under total of 212, good for a T-10th finish. Jake Maddaloni finished with a career-best 69 to post 217, followed by Wisdom (219), Michael Rudnick (222), and Jack Gardner (224).
- Middle Tennessee State won last year's tournament with a 29-under total of 835, one shot better than Utah Valley, which is back in the field this season. Missouri State was a distant third at 850. Bucknell was the best of the three Patriot League schools in the field, finishing ahead of Loyola (880) and Holy Cross (889).
- This is the first of seven spring events for the Bison, with the Bash at the Beach up next. Appalachian State hosts that event at the Surf Golf and Beach Club in North Myrtle Beach, S.C.
- The 2023 Patriot League Championship will be at Hillendale Country Club in Phoenix, Md., Apr. 28-30.
