Women’s Lacrosse Drops Season Opener at Penn State, 16-6
2/11/2023 3:37:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Kristin O'Neill scored six goals, including four straight in the first half to help Penn State break open a tight game, and the Nittany Lions went on to defeat Bucknell 16-6 on Saturday afternoon in the season opener for both teams at Panzer Stadium.
Freshman Katie Browne scored her first two collegiate goals, and senior goalie Symone Ryans made a career-high 16 saves to lead the Bison. Carly Cenci, Caroline Miller, Allie Boyce, and Taylor Kopan also scored for the Bison, while Taylor McClain handed out two assists.
It was a dream start for Bucknell against a Penn State side that received votes in the IWLCA Preseason Poll. Ella Payer named the game's opening draw, and just 66 seconds in Emily Baird fed Cenci for the first goal of the season. Less than two minutes later it was 2-0, as a save by Ryans led to Miller's goal off a feed from Tatumn Kohlbrenner.
Penn State got on the board at the 9:15 mark on an unassisted tally from Kara Nealon, and that would be the first of eight straight goals for the Nittany Lions. O'Neill, Penn State's 2022 scoring leader who was recently named to the Big Ten Players to Watch list, stretched the margin from 3-2 to 7-2 with her own personal 4-0 run.
Penn State led 10-3 at the half and by as many as 10 in the late stages.
This was the 17th all-time meeting between Bucknell and Penn State and was the closest game in the history of the series. Bucknell's six goals were its second-most against the Nittany Lions, trailing only the nine scored in a 21-9 loss at Graham Field in 2014.
The Bison are back in action at home on Wednesday against UMBC at 5 p.m. The Retrievers opened their campaign with a 19-10 rout of George Washington on Saturday.
