EBENSBURG, Pa. – Harrison Gold, Michael Owen, and Nick Mueller were all two-time winners on Friday as the Bucknell men's tennis team defeated Saint Francis (Pa.) by a 6-1 count at the Ebensburg Tennis Center. The Bison won their second straight match to improve to 2-4 on the season, while the Red Flash saw their two-match winning streak end and fell to 2-3.
Bucknell captured the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and 3. Owen and Mueller rolled to a 6-1 win on Court 3, and Gold and Brendan McDonald clinched the point while improving to 4-0 together at No. 1 doubles this spring with a 6-3 win.
In singles play, the top three positions went out first, and Bucknell swept all three to secure the team win. Owen was dominant at No. 3 singles, winning 6-1, 6-2 over Adam Kush. Gold brought the Bison to the brink with a 6-3, 6-2 verdict over Fabio Varella, and then freshman Amar Tahirovic clinched it with a come-from-behind three-set win over Marc Fuste. Deadlocked at a set apiece, Fuste broke Tahirovic's serve to start the third set, but then the Bison rookie won six straight games to pocket his team-leading 12th singles victory of the season.
Bucknell later added straight-set wins from Mueller at No. 4 and Tim Zelikovsky at No. 5. The Red Flash earned some consolation when Patrick Reese won a third-set super tiebreaker from McDonald at No. 6.
The Bison have the rest of the week off before playing twice next weekend. They will visit Howard next Saturday before hosting Coppin State on Sunday at the Central PA Tennis Center in South Williamsport.
