BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Bucknell men's tennis team's reign as Patriot League champion came to an end on Saturday, as this year's No. 1 seed Lehigh prevailed 4-2 in the tournament semifinals at the Lewis Indoor Tennis Center. Amar Tahirovic took over sole possession of Bucknell's career singles victory record, but the Mountain Hawks advanced to the final for the first time since winning their only Patriot League title in 2013.
Lehigh (15-8) won at the top two doubles positions to get out to an early lead, and that point would prove to be important as the singles session came right down to the wire.
Lehigh's indoor facility has four courts, and the two teams split those first four singles matches. Tahirovic beat Sean Jaeger 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1, and Liam Kilmer downed Kosei Ogata 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4. The Mountain Hawks kept pace with straight-set wins from Alex Van Lumich at No. 2 and Aleks Daskalovic at No. 3.
Bucknell (12-12) needed to take both of the final two matches, and Will Robinson was looking good up 6-2, 5-4 at No. 6. But at fifth singles, Ofer Hacohen reversed a loss to Brendan McDonald a week ago and prevailed 6-4, 6-4 to clinch it for Lehigh.
Tahirovic finished his senior season with a 30-7 singles record. There have been four 30-win seasons in program history, and Tahirovic has two of them. He graduates with a 113-25 career singles record, surpassing Nick Bybel's previous mark of 112 wins from 2012-16. Tahirovic also holds the school record for career combined singles/doubles victories, and McDonald departs as the team record-holder for career doubles wins.
