Bucknell at a Glance
- With the Patriot League title race in full swing, the Bison take a break from conference play when they travel to Princeton on Tuesday night. It will be a tough test, as Princeton is ranked No. 8 nationally in the RPI and No. 5 in the latest United Soccer Coaches East Region Poll.
- Bucknell faced the top two teams in the Patriot League table last week and came away with a win and a draw. The Bison clipped first-place Loyola 1-0 in Baltimore last Wednesday, handing the Greyhounds their first home loss of the season. Then on Saturday, Bucknell and Boston University played to a wild 3-3 draw in rainy conditions at Emmitt Field.
- With only two rounds of Patriot League play remaining, Loyola is still at the top with a 5-2-0 record at 15 points. Army (4-2-1, 13) has moved into second place, while Bucknell (3-1-3, 12) is alone in third place. Boston University (3-2-2, 11), Lehigh (3-3-1, 10), American (3-3-1, 10), Holy Cross (2-2-3, 9), and Lafayette (3-4-0, 9) are all within three points of Bucknell. The top six teams qualify for the Patriot League Tournament, and the top two receive byes into the semifinals.
- Paige Temple and Teresa Deda recorded points in both games last week. Temple scored the game's lone goal in the fourth minute at Loyola, and she struck again in the 72nd minute against Boston University, giving the Bison a brief 3-2 lead at the time.
- Deda had a hand in three of the team's four goals last week. She assisted on Temple's goal at Loyola and then logged a goal and an assist against the Terriers. Deda is the team's points leader with 17, coming on five goals and seven assists. She is tied with Loyola's Baylee DeSmit for the Patriot League lead in assists, and Deda is second to DeSmit in goals and points.
- On Tuesday, Deda was named to the Top Drawer Soccer "Team of the Week."
- Deda now has nine goals and 27 assists for 45 career points in less than three collegiate seasons. Her 27 assists are second-most in team history.
- Right behind that duo is Bucknell forward Henna Andican who has 15 points from five goals and five assists. Temple (3-3-9), Reese Evans (3-1-7), Hannah Stuck (2-3-7), Kelley Francis (3-0-6), Katie Schiano (1-4-6), and Meghan White (1-4-6) are other top point-producers.
- Senior goalkeeper Jenna Hall had a memorable game in last week's 1-0 win at Loyola. Hall made eight saves, including three sensational stops in the final minute of the match, and her 23rd career shutout broke the Bucknell record. Jessica Ratner recorded 22 clean sheets came from 2013-16. Ten of those came during her senior year, when she helped the Bison to the Patriot League title.
- The Bison went 5-2-1 in eight matches leading up to the conference opener. The only two losses came in succession to top-25 sides Georgetown and Pittsburgh, but after that they posted a 1-1 draw against a good Villanova team, followed by three straight wins over La Salle (3-1), Colorado College (5-2), and Air Force (2-1).
- Bucknell has scored 20 goals in its six wins this season, with a high of five in a come-from-behind 5-2 verdict over Colorado College.
- Bucknell has nine New Jersey natives on this year's roster, including two (Lea Tarzy, Riley Hayes) who attended The Hun School in Princeton.
- Bucknell is the two-time defending Patriot League champion. Last season, the second-seeded Bison won penalty-kick shootouts against Boston University and Army in the Patriot League Tournament, and then dropped a 1-0 overtime decision at Ohio State in the NCAA Tournament.
- Seniors Jenna Hall, Hannah Stuck, and Brooke Tracey are this year's team captains.
- Kelly Cook is in her ninth season as Bucknell's head coach, and she has led the Bison to four Patriot League championships in her first eight years. Cook owns a 79-58-23 (.566) overall record at Bucknell, including a 43-18-14 (.667) mark in Patriot League play.
- Cook knows the Patriot League very well, as she was a two-year captain and three-time Second Team All-Patriot League selection at Colgate, where she recorded 27 goals and 23 assists in her career. She ranked in the top 10 in program history in career points (77) and assists. As a junior in 2004, Cook (then Kelly Kuss) was named Patriot League Tournament MVP after leading the Raiders to the league title, and then her team knocked off Arizona in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, marking the first NCAA win in school and league history.
- Cook has two new assistant coaches in 2023, as former Clarion head coach Alexa Ream and goalkeepers coach PJ Steiner have joined the program.Â
- Princeton is once again one of the top teams in the talent-rich Ivy League. After Saturday's 1-1 road draw at Harvard, the Tigers are 8-2-3 overall and 3-1-1 in conference. Their only two losses this season have come on the road to Penn State and Brown.
- Now 6-0-1 at home, Princeton is tied for second place in the Ivy League alongside Harvard, five points behind 5-0 Brown. Only the top four teams qualify for the Ivy League Tournament.
- This will be Princeton's third game of the season against a Patriot League side. The Tigers won a 4-3 thriller over Army and also drew Lafayette 1-1.
- The Bison will have a watchful eye on sophomore Pietra Tordin, who has 10 goals this season and 18 already in her career. Tordin, the 2022 Ivy League Rookie of the Year, is tied for the NCAA lead with six game-winning goals. She scored all four of her team's goals in a 4-3 win over Army on Sept. 2 and had nine goals in the first seven games of the season.
- Princeton has scored 30 goals in 13 games this season. Lexi Hiltunen has four and Jen Estes three, while Tordin, Drew Coomans, and Lily Bryant share the team lead with five assists.
- Goalkeeper Tyler McCamey has started all 13 games and has 35 saves with 16 goals against.Â
- Bucknell is 1-10-1 all-time against the Tigers, with the lone win a 4-1 home verdict in 2007. The Bison also earned a 1-1 away draw in 2016. Kendall Ham's 14th goal of the season helped them improve to 13-1-2 after that tie. Kelsey Johnson and Hall-of-Famer Jennifer Dervarics scored two goals apiece in the 2007 win.
- Princeton has dominated the other 10 matches in the series, with their wins coming by a combined margin of 36-6.
- Last season at Emmitt Field, Princeton scored early and late in a 2-0 win. Kate Toomey scored on a corner kick scrum in the 11th minute, and Pietra Tordin took advantage of a Bison turnover in the back and finished on a breakaway in the 83rd minute.
- Last year's game against Princeton was Bucknell's last home loss. The Bison are unbeaten in their 13 games (7-0-6) at home since then.
- Bucknell's last trip to Princeton was one to forget for the Bison. The Tigers scored three times in the first 12 minutes of the match and went on to win 6-1. Abby Gearhart scored Bucknell's goal in the 62nd minute, off assists by Alana Carlucci and Paige Temple.Â
- Bucknell has two Patriot League fixtures still remaining. The Bison host Lafayette on Senior Day on Saturday before finishing out the regular season at Lehigh the following Wednesday.
