Bucknell at a Glance
- After a resounding 3-0 home win over Colgate on Saturday, the Bison have two more games at Emmitt Field on tap this week. Bucknell and Princeton square off on Tuesday in a matchup of two 2021 NCAA Tournament teams, and then it's nothing but Patriot League games the rest of the way starting with Holy Cross in a Homecoming Saturday match at Emmitt Field.
- After playing five straight games on the road, the Bison were certainly glad to be back in the friendly confines of Emmitt Field on Saturday. Bucknell was in control of the match right from the opening whistle and scored three first-half goals, all on services from the right side of the field. Abby Gearhart headed in a Teresa Deda corner kick in the 14th minute; Henna Andican headed home a Rylee Donaldson cross on the half-hour mark; and Reese Evans one-timed Kelley Francis's low cross in the 37th minute.
- Bucknell is now unbeaten in its last nine home games (8-0-1) dating back more than a calendar year. The last road team to escape Emmitt Field with a win was 12th-ranked West Virginia on Aug. 27, 2021. The Bison have outscored their guests 24-6 during the nine-game unbeaten streak.
- Gearhart and Andican received Patriot League honors on Monday. Gearhart was selected as the Patriot League Midfielder of the Week after scoring the game-winning goal in both of the team's victories last week. Her 81st-minute tally was the difference in a 1-0 win at American last Wednesday.
- Andican earned Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors after collecting her first collegiate goal against Colgate.
- Rylee Donaldson, the reigning Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year and golden boot winner, shares the team goal-scoring lead with Gearhart with three apiece. Evans now has two goals this season, while Andican Sydney Hess, Hannah Stuck, and Paige Temple have one each.
- Donaldson and Gearhart are tied for fourth in the Patriot League in goals. Loyola's Baylee DeSmit leads with five, and Lafayette's Sara Oswald and Army's Dara Murray have four apiece. Gearhart and DeSmit are tied for the league lead with three game-winning goals.
- Donaldson has recorded an assist in each of the last two games and leads the team with eight points.
- Deda also has a helper in two straight and now has a team and league-high five assists on the season. After leading the Patriot League with 12 helpers as a freshman in 2021, Deda is already up to fourth place on Bucknell's career assists chart with 17, just 10 games into her sophomore year. Deda was named the Patriot League Preseason Midfielder of the Year prior to the season.
- Deda has also attempted the most shots (33) of any player in the Patriot League.
- Goalkeeper Jenna Hall ranks second in the league in goals-against average (0.92) and save percentage (.806).
- Bucknell is the defending Patriot League champion. Seeded fourth in the 2021 league tournament after being picked ninth in the preseason poll, Bucknell posted consecutive shutouts of Lehigh (2-0), Navy (1-0 OT), and Boston University (1-0) to claim the fifth conference title in team history. The Bison then held their own in a 2-0 loss to top-seeded Rutgers in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Scarlet Knights later advanced all the way to the College Cup semifinals.
- Bucknell last year became the first team to win three Patriot League Tournament games since the league expanded to a six-team format in 2013. Only teams seeded No. 1 or 2 — and thus earning a bye straight into the semifinals — had ever won the title.
- Bucknell was also the only team in the country seeded fourth or lower to win its conference tournament. Of the 28 Division I conference tournaments, 25 were won by No. 1 or 2 seeds. Michigan in the Big Ten and Memphis in the AAC won as No. 3 seeds, and Bucknell did it as a No. 4.
- Seniors Leanne Engemann and Petie Nassetta are the team co-captains in 2022.
- Kelly Cook is in her eighth season on the Bison sideline. Cook owns a 68-53-14 (.556) overall record at Bucknell, including a 37-17-8 (.661) mark in Patriot League play. Cook knows the Patriot League very well, as she was a two-year captain and three-time Second Team All-Patriot League selection at Colgate, where she recorded 27 goals and 23 assists in her career. She ranked in the top 10 in program history in career points (77) and assists. As a junior in 2004, Cook (then Kelly Kuss) was named Patriot League Tournament MVP after leading the Raiders to the league title, and then her team knocked off Arizona in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, marking the first NCAA win in school and league history.
- The Tigers are coming off a sensational 15-3-1 season in 2021. Princeton went 6-1 in the Ivy League and received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, where they defeated Vermont 2-0 in a first-round home game. The Tigers were eliminated by eighth-ranked TCU, 3-2 in overtime, in the second round.
- Princeton returned 13 goal-scorers from last year's team, led by Lily Bryant who scored six.
- Heather MacNab and Pietra Tordin lead this year's squad with four goals apiece. MacNab tallied three of those goals in a season-opening 4-2 win over Colgate.
- Princeton started the season 3-0 but has dropped four of its last six to fall to 5-4 on the season. That includes a 1-0 away loss at Yale in the Ivy League opener on Saturday. Princeton led 19-9 in shots and 14-4 in corner kicks but could not overcome a Yale goal five minutes into the match.
- In six competitive seasons at Princeton, head coach Sean Driscoll has guided the Tigers to three Ivy League titles and four NCAA bids. In three of those four NCAA appearances, Princeton advanced out of the first round, including a trip to the quarterfinals in 2017.
The Bucknell-Princeton Series
- Bucknell is 1-9-1 all-time against the Tigers, with the lone win a 4-1 home verdict in 2007. The Bison also earned a 1-1 away draw in 2016. Kendall Ham's 14th goal of the season helped them improve to 13-1-2 after that tie. Kelsey Johnson and Hall-of-Famer Jennifer Dervarics scored two goals apiece in the 2007 win.
- Princeton has dominated the other nine matches in the series, with their wins coming by a combined margin of 34-6.
- Last year's game at Princeton was one to forget for the Bison. The Tigers scored three times in the first 12 minutes of the match and went on to win 6-1. Abby Gearhart scored Bucknell's goal in the 62nd minute, off assists by Alana Carlucci and Paige Temple.
- The Crusaders are off until Saturday and will bring an 0-7-4 record to Emmitt Field. Holy Cross is 0-2-1 in Patriot League play, with a 1-1 draw against American followed by 1-0 losses to Army and Lehigh.
- Holy Cross will be looking to snap a 22-game winless streak (0-17-5) dating back to a 3-0 win over Bryant on Sept. 5, 2021.
- Sydney Baldwin, Francesca Clatto, Kailee McCabe, and Colleen McIlvenna have scored goals for the Crusaders this season.
- Olivia Dubin has started 10 of the 11 games in goal and has 47 saves with 15 goals against.
- Bucknell is 23-6-2 all-time against Holy Cross, but the Crusaders ended Bucknell's long run of dominance with a 3-0 win in Worcester in the final game of the 2019 regular season. That result clinched a Patriot League Tournament berth for Holy Cross while knocking Bucknell out of the postseason.
- Prior to that game, Bucknell had won 14 straight against Holy Cross by a combined 36-6 margin.
- Bucknell is 12-3-1 all-time in Worcester and 11-2-1 in Lewisburg.
- The Bison have won the last seven meetings at Emmitt Field, with Holy Cross's last win here coming in 2004 (3-0).
- The two teams have met just once in the postseason, a 1-0 Holy Cross win in the 2000 Patriot League semifinals in Hamilton, N.Y.
- In last year's meeting in Worcester, Claire Mensi and Rylee Donaldson scored second-half goals in Bucknell's 2-0 win. Mensi, who saw two shots ring off the goalpost in the first half, scored from the penalty spot in the 50th minute, and Donaldson scored a terrific insurance marker after Kenar Gelman expertly bent a long pass around the defense.
- After the Holy Cross game, Bucknell heads back out on the road to face Lafayette on Friday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m.
