About the Bison

Bucknell makes its traditional season-opening trip to Hamilton, N.Y., for the Alex Lagowitz Memorial Invitational this weekend. The 14-team field includes four from the Patriot League, with Lehigh and Lafayette joining Bucknell and Colgate.
This is the first of five fall events for the Bison, who will also appear in tournaments hosted by Cornell/Temple, Yale, and LIU, in addition to hosting the annual Bucknell Invitational on Oct. 9-11. The Bucknell Invitational will be a three-day affair for the second year in a row.
The Bison return eight of their 10 rostered players from last season, including five of the six who teed it up at the Patriot League Championship at Steel Club. Jason Lohwater is the lone graduation loss from that PL squad. Lohwater was one of the team's top players all season, as his 2021-22 scoring average of 74.0 was second-best on the team.
This year's team features a talented senior class, with Jackson Bussell, Blake Wisdom, Jack Gardner, and Josh Holtschlag having all played numerous tournaments over the last three seasons.
Bussell's 73.2 full-season average was the best on the team a year ago, and he picked up his second career win at the Howard Bison Invitational. Bussell posted a final-round 68 at the Patriot League Championship to earn all-conference honors with a T-6th finish.
Wisdom posted four below-par rounds last spring on the way to a 73.3 average, and this summer he qualified for the prestigious U.S. Amateur Championship. In his U.S. Am qualifier at White Eagle GC in Illinois, he fired a final-round 64 to grab a share of medalist honors. This was Wisdom's first time in the U.S. Amateur field after qualifying as an alternate at Oakmont in 2021.
Bucknell has three freshmen on the team this season, and two of them will be making their collegiate debuts at Colgate. Jupiter, Fla., native James Key and North Andover, Mass., native James Robbins will both be in the lineup. Another Floridian, Andres Barraza (Parkland) is also on the squad.
Key and Robbins will join Wisdom, Bussell, Holtschlag, and Jack Gardner in the lineup this week. Colgate utilizes a play-6, count-4 format for its season-opening event.

Bucknell at the Alex Lagowitz Memorial Invitational

Bucknell has competed in Colgate's fall tournament every year since 2002 (except for 2011, when the event was rained out, and 202, when it was canceled due to COVID-19). Prior to 2002, Colgate and Cornell ran a combined event for several years, utilizing both schools' courses.
The Bison have fared well in this event, winning it in 2004 and 2006 while finishing in the top four in 12 of 18 years. Brian Bartow is Bucknell's lone individual champion here. He won the Colgate Invitational in 2009.
Bucknell started strong in last season's tournament, sitting in fifth place after 36 holes after rounds of 293-298. But a 302 finish dropped the Bison down to 10th. Jason Lohwater was the low Bison at 219 (69-74-76), which put him in a tie for 13th place.

After Colgate's tournament, Bucknell will travel to the 1912 Club in Plymouth Meeting, Pa., for a two-day event (Sept. 17-18) co-hosted by Cornell and Temple.
