VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Bucknell men's tennis team wrapped up play at the Villanova Invitational on Sunday. Highlighting the weekend was the duo of senior Nick Mueller and freshman Brendan McDonald winning their mini competition for the third straight day.
This event utilizes an unusual bracketed team format, where two-man entries play a doubles match and then break off into two singles matches. Whichever tandem wins at least two of the three points advances in the bracket.
Mueller and McDonald swept all three matches from Colgate on Friday and Saint Joseph's on Saturday, and then on Sunday they took two of the three points to defeat Lehigh. They won the doubles match 7-5, Mueller lost his singles match in three sets, but McDonald clinched it with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Jason Morash.
The Bucknell duo would have played another Lehigh tandem for the Blue Draw championship, but the final and consolation finals were not completed as rain moved into the area.
Also playing in the Blue Draw were junior Tim Zelikovsky and freshman Amar Tahirovic. In their first-round pairing against Lehigh, Tahirovic won his singles match in three sets, but the Mountain Hawks won the other two points in close contests. Zelikovsky and Tahirovic did win their next two to advance to the third-place match. They swept Lafayette on Saturday, and then against Lehigh on Sunday they bounced back to win both singles matches after losing 7-5 in doubles.
Senior Michael Owen paired with freshman Gui Padilha in the White Draw. The Bison team opened the tournament with a 2-1 win over Lafayette, with Owen clinching the verdict with a come-from-behind, three-set singles victory over Josh Wolfe.
Owen and Padilha followed with losses to Villanova and Lafayette.
All told, the three Bison tandems combined for a 6-3 record in the mini-groups and a 17-9 individual match record.
Bucknell will be back in action on Sept. 23-25 at the Binghamton Invitational.
