About Bucknell
- Bucknell remains on the road this weekend to face Kent State on Sunday. The Bison are seeking their first win of the season after facing two tough teams in No. 9 Louisville and James Madison last weekend.
- Bucknell looked strong in its season opener, as it finished even with the Cardinals in shots (11) and led 5-4 in penalty corner opportunities. After giving up a goal in the fourth minute of action, the Bison held Louisville off the board for the next 49 minutes. A Lily Neilson goal tied the game at 1-1 shortly after halftime, but the Cards scored the game winner with 7:07 remaining in the fourth.
- The Bison gave up four first-half goals to the Dukes on Sunday, but they stayed in the contest with goals just before and after halftime to cut the deficit to two. James Madison ended up scoring two more times and held advantages in shots (13-9) and corners (8-7).
- Neilson, the Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, is off to a fast start with two goals in each of the first two games. She now has 17 in her young career and was an honorable mention for Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week on Monday. Through two games, Neilson leads the league in shots on goal (6) and is one of four players with multiple goals.
- Scoring Bucknell's other goal over the weekend was freshman Gianna Puorro, who got the deflection on a Kari Melberger penalty corner shot against James Madison. She played a combined 42 minutes last weekend.
- Melberger, Kayla Kisthardt and Mackenzie Kile all contributed assists during Sunday's contest. Kile's assist was the 20th of her career.
- Clara McCormick has totaled 13 saves in the cage through two games. She made seven saves in the Louisville game.
- Bucknell rolled with the same starting 11 in both games last weekend. Four Bison (Noor Kaur, Isabella Pavlides, Hannah Guarente and Kira Leclercq) made their first career starts.
- Bucknell is under the direction of first-year head coach Kelsey Kolojejchick. Kolojejchick, a former four-time All-American out of the University of North Carolina and a Junior Pan American Games gold medalist, arrives at Bucknell after spending the past four years as an assistant at Harvard.
- Bucknell was picked third in the 2022 Patriot League Field Hockey Preseason Poll. American finished first in the poll and was followed by Lafayette, which is how the standings ended up last fall.
- Kent State opened its season 1-1 last weekend with a 1-0 overtime victory against Indiana and a 9-0 loss to No. 6 Liberty at the Hoosier Invitational. The Golden Flashes will also face No. 10 Syracuse on Friday before their game against Bucknell.
- The Golden Flashes faced 31 shots in their tough matchup with Liberty. They've faced 46 on the season while posting 11 themselves.
- Freshman Maia Sarrabayrouse has the lone goal on the season, and fellow rookie Patricia Strunk supplied the assist.
- Sophomore goalkeeper Cecile van Eijck has started both games this season and made one start in 2021. She allowed the first seven goals to the Flames before freshman Hayley Gable entered the game in the second half.
- Kent State boasts a veteran unit that is highlighted by senior Maria Cambra Soler, who was an All-MAC First Team selection in 2021. Six returners started all 18 games last fall.
- Kent State tied for the MAC regular season title for the second time in the past three years in 2021. The Golden Flashes were picked second in the 2022 MAC preseason poll, receiving one first place vote.
- The Golden Flashes are led by fourth-year head coach Kyle DeSandes-Moyer. She's guided the team to a 35-19 record over her career.
- Bucknell is 1-3-1 all-time with Kent State, dating back to 1987.
- The Bison and the Golden Flashes played last season on Oct. 17, 2021 in Lewisburg. The then-24th ranked Golden Flashes earned a 2-1 victory, scoring two goals in the first half. Bucknell's Erin Zielinski responded with a goal on a penalty corner in the 52nd minute. The Bison led 10-4 in shots, putting six on target, and saw all five corners in the game.
- Bucknell's only win in the series was a 3-2 overtime decision in 2007.
- Bucknell makes its home debut against Central Michigan on Friday, Sept. 9. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
