KENT, Ohio – Kent State erased a 2-0 Bucknell lead with three unanswered goals in the second half, handing the Bison a loss at a rainy Murphy-Mellis Field on Sunday. Sophomore Lily Neilson and junior Mia Fields scored goals within 38 seconds of each other in the second quarter to give the Bison their first lead of the season, but the Golden Flashes returned motivated after the halftime break and posted a 13-2 advantage in shots over the final two frames. Kent State scored all three goals in a 3:11 span.
Kayla Kisthardt supplied assists on both of Bucknell's goals, which were each scored on penalty corners. Mackenzie Kile finished with one assist as well. Bucknell goalkeeper Clara McCormick finished with seven saves. Neilson, who has now scored a goal in all three games this season, registered five of Bucknell's eight shots.
Outside of the opening five minutes of the game that saw Bucknell successfully fend off three consecutive Kent State penalty corners, the Bison were in control throughout the first half. They led 9-4 in shots and 4-3 in corners. Neilson broke the scoring open with a shot from the top of the circle in the 21st minute. Fields pushed the lead to 2-0 38 seconds later with the first goal of her career.
Bucknell posted two more shots over the remainder of the half, totaling seven in the second quarter and limiting the Golden Flashes to none in the frame.
McCormick made a strong save on a penalty corner five minutes into the third, but a barrage of six straight Kent State shots ensued. All three goals came in succession, and the Bison were trailing just 12:30 into the third quarter.
Bucknell, forced to play portions of the second half shorthanded following three green cards, got just one more shot attempt off in the fourth quarter after earning a corner with under two minutes to play.
Bucknell makes its home debut at Graham Field on Friday, Sept. 9 when Central Michigan travels to Lewisburg. The game is set to begin at 4 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
