Bison Field Hockey Drops Sunday Contest at James Madison

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Bucknell field hockey team visited James Madison (2-2) Sunday for its second game of the season and fell 6-2 to a red-hot Dukes team that has posted nine goals over its first two contests. Bucknell (0-2) made things interesting in the middle portions of the game by scoring just before and after the halftime break, cutting a 4-0 deficit in half.
Gianna Puorro and Lily Neilson accounted for Bucknell's two goals, with Kari Melberger, Kayla Kisthard and Mackenzie Kile each providing assists. James Madison led 13-9 in shots, putting 12 on goal. It also held an 8-7 edge in penalty corner opportunities.
The Dukes were on the board early as Diede Remijnse scored on a corner 4:43 into the game. It was the first of two goals for the 2021 All-CAA senior.
James Madison struck again in the 20th and 23rd minute, first on a cross in front of the goal and then on another corner, putting the Bison behind 3-0. With under three minutes to play before halftime, the Dukes pushed the lead to four by converting their third penalty corner of the half.
This time, Bucknell responded less than a minute later as Puorro got the deflection on a Melberger shot from the top of the circle on a corner. James Madison doubled Bucknell's shot attempts in the first half.
Bucknell continued to gain momentum out of the break when Neilson also scored from the top of the circle on another corner four and a half minutes into the third. It was Neilson's second goal of the season-opening weekend.
Goalkeeper Clara McCormick held the Dukes off the board in the third, making four of her six saves during that frame. James Madison, however, put the game out of reach with a goal in the first minute of the fourth and another with nine minutes left.
The Bison are back in action next weekend with a Sunday game at Kent State on Sept. 4.
