PHILADELPHIA – Penn, competing for an Ivy League Championship this coming weekend, used a five-run seventh inning to come from behind and take a 10-4 win over the Bison in the final tune-up before postseason competition resumes for both teams.
Bucknell, which hasn't faced the Quakers since 1960, took a 4-3 lead in the top of the seventh on a single by Brendan Lowery that scored Jacob Corson, but the Quakers scored seven unanswered runs over the final two innings to take the seventh all-time matchup between the two schools.
Bucknell trailed 2-0 after two innings, but Corson was on hand to tie the game in the third as his RBI single plated Chris Cannizzaro and Grant Voytovich, who reached on an error and a double, respectively.
The Bison grabbed the lead for the first time in the fourth, when the in-form Lowery led off the inning with a double before moving over a bag on a groundout. Logan Kellerman then singled home his fellow senior on a looping ball to left field that fell in between three Quaker fielders, allowing Lowery to touch home and give Bucknell a 3-2 lead.
Bucknell carried that lead into the sixth, before back-to-back doubles by the home team tied the game once more at three. However, the Bison responded almost immediately in taking the lead in the top of the seventh, as Corson walked on four pitches before moving a base on a wild pitch. A groundout and Lowery's single to the third baseman helped Corson touch home and gave Bucknell a 4-3 lead.
The Quakers found their groove offensively in the bottom of the seventh to take the lead for good, notching four hits and scoring five runs in the frame and adding two more runs in the eighth to take the win, their 32nd victory of the season.
The two teams combined to use 15 pitchers, with the home team using nine in the victory. Ben Magovern (4.0 IP, two strikeouts, 2 ER) got the ball to start the game, while Renn Lints, Bryce Reimer, Brady Swenson, Nikhil Patel, and Luke Allain all made appearances out of the bullpen. Allain struck out two in his appearance, while Swenson and Lints also added a pair of strikeouts.
Anthony Sherwin drew three walks on the day, bringing his season total to 37, which ranks second on Bucknell's all-time, single-season list to Luke Hartman's 2018 tally of 41. Grant Voytovich enjoyed another multi-hit outing in going 2-for-4, while Lowery and Kellerman also collected two hits.
Bucknell will now look ahead to its first Patriot League Championship series, with the first game scheduled for Tuesday, May 24. The Bison will play at Army in a best-of-three series, with single games scheduled on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, if necessary.
