LEWISBURG, Pa. – Caroline Miller scored a dramatic goal with 12 seconds left in regulation to force overtime, but Matty Spaeth found the net 48 seconds into the extra period to lift Boston University to an 11-10 win over Bucknell in Patriot League women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Graham Field.
Bucknell (6-9, 3-5 PL) led by as many as four goals late in the first half and by three at the break, but the Terriers (2-13, 1-7 PL) rallied behind red-hot goalie Reilly Agres and three second-half goals from Kaelin Isaacson. The last of those came with 32 seconds left in regulation and gave Boston University its first lead of the day at 10-9.
Ella Payer won the ensuing draw control for Bucknell, and after Taylor Kopan hustled to track down a loose ball in the corner, Katie Wendell fed Miller for the tying tally with 12 ticks remaining.
Jennifer Barry, who is closing in on becoming Boston University's all-time leader in draw controls, was limited to three in this one, but she nabbed the loose ball on the opening scrum of overtime. After working the ball behind the cage, the Terriers found Spaeth up top, and she was able to dodge her defender and fired low for her first goal of the game and 25th of the season.
Wendell and Laurel McHale, two of Bucknell's 10 seniors honored prior to the game, both had multi-point outings. Wendell logged two goals and two assists for four points, while McHale had a goal and two assists. Miller also tallied three points with two goals and an assist, Allie Boyce recorded a pair of goals, and Colleen Kelly notched a goal and an assist.
Boyce now has 35 goals on the season, leaving her three shy of the Bucknell freshman record.
The Bison enjoyed a fast start, with consecutive goals by Wendell, McHale, and Kopan staking them to a 4-1 first-quarter lead. A nice feed from McHale to Miller for a goal late in the shot clock gave Bucknell its largest advantage at 7-3 with 1:47 left in the first half, but the Terriers pulled one back before halftime to make it a 7-4 game at intermission.
Boston University rallied to tie the game at 8-8 on a Barry goal that beat the buzzer at the end of the third quarter. Neither team scored for the first eight minutes of the fourth quarter until Tatumn Kohlbrenner snapped Bucknell's 17:50 scoreless drought with 6:45 to go.
The Terriers tied it on an Isaacson free-position goal with 3:15 left. Bucknell had a good chance to take the lead, but Agres robbed Kopan from close range with just over a minute to play. That set up Isaacson's go-ahead tally with 32 seconds left.
Bucknell outshot Boston University 33-24, but a season-high 16 saves from Agres was big for the Terriers. Bucknell led 16-8 in draw controls and received 10 saves from goalie Caitlin Tucker.
The loss dropped the Bison into seventh place in the Patriot League standings with one game remaining in the regular season. Bucknell travels to Holy Cross next Friday and can still play its way into the postseason with a win and some help.
