WORCESTER, Mass. – Taylor Kopan recorded a career-high five points and Ella Payer set a school record with 15 draw controls, but not much else went right for the Bucknell women's lacrosse team in a 19-9 loss at Holy Cross on Friday at Kuzniewski Field.
Bucknell needed a win and an American loss at Boston University to qualify for the six-team Patriot League Tournament. It turned out the Bison did not get the help they needed anyway, as American won 16-12 in Boston to snag the final playoff spot.
The Bison looked sharp early in taking two-goal leads at 2-0, 3-1, and 5-3. Kopan's first of four goals on the day, followed by a Caroline Miller tally made it a 2-0 game after 4:49 of play. After the Crusaders rallied to tie it at 3-all, Emma Cashwell and Kopan scored just 63 seconds apart for a 5-3 Bison advantage.
That was the score after one period, but Holy Cross completely dominated the second quarter, outscoring the Bison 7-0 and outshooting them 14-0. Turnovers were an issue for Bucknell all day, with eight of its season-high 23 miscues coming in that troublesome second stanza.
Allie Boyce ended Bucknell's long goal drought with her team-leading 36th of the season at the 12:28 mark of the third quarter, but Holy Cross answered with three more in succession to make it an 11-1 run and a 14-6 lead.
Kopan's fourth goal of the day and 22nd of the season early in the fourth brought Bucknell within 15-9, but that would be it for the Bison while Holy Cross tacked on four more to end its season on a positive note. Both teams finished the year 6-10 overall and 3-6 in the Patriot League.
Goalie Symone Ryans came on in relief in the second quarter and had a solid game with a career-high 14 saves and 13 goals against. Grace Flink stopped eight shots for the Crusaders, who finished with a 40-24 shot advantage.
Jolie Creo paced the Holy Cross attack with five goals and two assists, and she broke team records for goals and points in a season.
Bucknell led 18-13 in draw controls, led by Payer's 15. She shattered the previous school record of 11, set by Bonnie Buechel against Saint Francis (Pa.) in 2007. Payer finished the season with 82 draw controls, which are tied for second-most in team history and two shy of the school record. She will enter her senior season with 119 career draw controls, the sixth-highest total in team annals.
