LEWISBURG, Pa. – Isabelle Monaghan scored a program-record ten goals, and the Bucknell University women's water polo team also poured in a school-record 27 goals en route to a commanding 27-9 victory over Mount St. Mary's on the second day of the CWPA Tournament. Bucknell will close its CWPA Tournament with a matchup against Saint Francis (Pa.) at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
The ten goals by Monaghan broke a two-year old school record that was held by Bison great Ally Furano. Furano set the mark with eight goals on Feb. 1, 2020 in Bucknell's win over No. 24 Marist on the opening day of the season. Monaghan's teammate Paige Furano and assistant coach Hannah Sunday also have held the record in the past with seven before Furano's eight-goal outing in 2020.
The 27 goals by the team were also the most in program history, breaking the previous mark of 26 against Gannon in 2011. Monaghan also tied the program record for points in a game, also held by A. Furano with ten points overall, a mark that the latter set in 2019 against Gannon on six goals and four assists. P. Furano also tied her elder sister's record for points in a game in the victory, as her three goals and seven assists also gave the senior a share of the top spot.
The Bison left no doubt in this one from the get-go, scoring the first six goals of the game before Beatrice Viera found the back of the cage for The Mount in the first period. Monaghan scored half of her goals during that opening stretch, firing in the first five goals of the game, all in the first period.
The Bison added three more goals, two from Boati Motau on either side of a goal by Chloe Smith, to take an 8-1 lead at the end of the first. Bucknell extended that lead to eight at the half, 13-5, and cruised to a 27-9 victory.
Monaghan was one of ten Bison to find the scoresheet, with Ali Jackson (4), Furano (3), Larissa Hodzic (2), Motau (2) and Sidney Finkler (2) each contributing multiple goals. Furano's seven assists were one shy of the program record, while Motau also recorded six assists.
Annika Lampen made the start for the Bison in the cage today, making ten saves and adding two steals.
The Bison will wrap up their season on Sunday at 9 a.m. against the Red Flash.
