LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell University women's water polo team dropped an exciting 8-6 overtime contest to Saint Francis (Pa.) in its final game of the regular season.
Bucknell led 5-4 with six minutes remaining in the fourth, but the Red Flash found the tying goal with just a few minutes remaining to send the game to overtime, outscoring the Bison 3-1 in the final two overtime periods to take the win.
After a program-record 27 goals by the Bison in yesterday's win over Mount St. Mary's, Sunday morning's game against the Red Flash was a defensive battle, with the two teams combining to score just six goals in the first half.
It was the Bison who gained an early advantage in first, courtesy of two goals by Chloe Smith on either side of a goal by Boati Motau to take a 3-1 lead after one. Smith kept that momentum up in the second period as the two teams struggled to score, finally breaking an over six-minute scoreless streak by both squads with a goal with 1:49 remaining in the half. However, the Red Flash managed to find the back of the cage just 11 seconds later to keep within two, 4-2, at halftime.
Smith scored her fourth and final goal of the game at the 4:21 mark of the third quarter to restore Bucknell's three-goal advantage, 5-2, but the Bison couldn't find an insurance goal the rest of regulation, as the Red Flash scored three unanswered goals over the next 12 minutes to send the game into overtime.
Isabelle Monaghan, one day after her record-setting ten goal outing against Mount St. Mary's, nearly won the game for the Bison on a long shot with just two seconds left, but the Red Flash defense managed to knock the ball down just short of the goal.
The first overtime period remained scoreless until nine seconds to go, when the Red Flash took the lead for the first time with a goal with nine seconds remaining.
Bucknell tied the game once more at six when Smith and Bella Moynihan exchanged passes before Smith found Moynihan near the center of the attacking area. Moynihan then fired a low shot to the near post for her first goal of the game at the 2:34 mark to even things up at six all.
The Red Flash took the lead for good with 1:23 to go, before adding a late insurance goal with 33 seconds left to secure a two-goal victory.
Smith led the way for the Bison with her four-goal performance, while Motau and Moynihan added Bucknell's other goals. Sam Gove made the start in the cage, making a career-best 14 saves.
The home contest was the final game for seniors Paige Furano and Larissa Hodzic, who helped the program to its top two CWPA finishes, each scoring over 25 goals this season for the Orange and Blue.
