WILLIAMSBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women's track & field team completed the first day of the Colonial Relays on Friday and is in great position heading into Saturday's events. Bucknell is currently in second place among the field of 34 teams with 40.5 points, trailing only William & Mary (49.5). Bucknell grabbed points in 10 different events on day one.
"It was a very good day one for our ladies. Although we didn't set the lineup to try to win the meet, we are in second place as a team and have some nice scoring opportunities on Saturday," said head coach Kevin Donner. "I always make it a goal to run all six relays on day two, and we believe we can place pretty high in two to three of them and sneak a point or two in others. All the event areas looked good on Friday, as we got a lot of PRs and nice early season marks across the board."
Bucknell's highest-scoring finisher on Friday was Karen Hull, who cracked the school's top 10 list and placed first in the high jump with a 5-5.25. Hull contributed to 10 points to the Bison effort, and teammate Abby Kates scored in the high jump as well with a 5-3.25 to tie for third in the event.
"It's great to see Hull winning the high jump, and Kates got a few points as well in the high jump. It seems Deschler and Ramos are back after struggling at the end of indoor season, as they ran well in the 10k and 5k, respectively," said Donner.
Scoring eight points for Bucknell was senior Ashlyn Ramos, who ran an outstanding 16:44.51 in the 5000 to finish third among the competition. Meanwhile, fellow senior distance runner Emily Deschler placed fifth in the 10k with a 36:38.80 to grab four points.
Meghan Quinn continued to climb top 10 lists with another impressive showing in the 200, scoring fourth-place points with a 24.70. The sophomore's time places her fourth in the record books and was the fastest time run by a Bison since Jess Bridle set the school record in 2016.
Junior Jessie Castellano scored in the 400, finishing seventh with a 57.23 and rounding out Bucknell's scoring finishers in track events. Fellow junior Mikayla Horvath just missed out on points, placing ninth in the 400 hurdles with a 1:04.44.
In the throws, Riley Beebe scored in the javelin with a 119-03 to take sixth, and Madison McGloin earned a single point in the hammer throw with a 160-02.
Gianna Macones scored three points in the long jump, placing sixth with an 18-3 to help Bucknell secure a second-place spot heading into Saturday. Earning a win in the university section of the long jump was Lila Gaughan, who cleared 18-5.
"Quinn and Castellano ran great in the 200 and 400 to get some nice points in the sprints. Macones placed high in the long jump as usual, and we got some nice points out of McGloin in the hammer and Beebe in the javelin. Gaughan jumped great in the unseeded long jump but unfortunately doesn't get the points, but it does set her up for future meets," said Donner. "Horvath is developing great consistency in the 400 hurdles."
Also notable was a second-place finish in the university section of the 800 by Mackenzie Turner, who ran a 2:16.60.
The meet wraps up on Saturday with events beginning at 9 a.m.
"I'm very happy with how balanced our team is, and it showed on day one," said Donner.
